Standard Lesson Plan Format

I. Describe the Class

- There are 20 students in the class, half of them is 10th grade, another half is 11th

grade. There are no students with learning disabled or giftedness. But, all of the

students are second language learners

II. Subjects/ Skills:

Geoscience: Earth’s layer

- Analytical skill: Able to analyze science videos or texts and fully understand the

meaning of it.

- Searching for information skill: Able to search for information when needed,

whether in a book or on the internet.

- Know (what it mean) for the following vocabularies: Atmosphere, Oceans, Crust,

Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core.

- Background knowledge from last class: “all the heavy meatal will sink deep and

close to the Earth core”

III. Objectives

- Students can answer the question “why the Earth have several layers” from there

background knowledge that have been learned last class. Students can do this

question in two minutes.

- After the lecture, the student will be able to describe (draw) and identify on their

poster about Earth’s layers. Student’s poster can be done in 30 minutes.

IV. Procedures:

1. State the objectives and orient student to the lesson:

3

- Students can answer the question “why does the Earth have several layers”

- Students can evaluate what is the difference between each layer of the Earth.

Crust (1st layer): the outermost shell of a terrestrial planet.

Mantle (2nd layer): Earth's mantle is a layer of silicate rock between the crust and

the outer core.

Outer Core (3rd layer): Earth's outer core is a fluid layer about 2,260 km (1,400

mi) thick, composed of mostly iron and nickel that lies above Earth's solid inner

core and below its mantle and responsible for generating the planet's magnetic

field.

Inner Core: Earth's inner core is the innermost geologic layer of planet Earth. It is

primarily a solid ball with a radius of about 1,220 km (760 mi).

2. Review Prerequisites:

- Background knowledge: Student need to know that heavier metal will sink and

lighter metal will float. And because of this, it makes the Earth’s layers.

- Students will need to know how to conduct research on internet for the

information need.

- The purpose of this lesson is to help student have a full understand about each

layer of the Earth. Able to describe and identify the characteristic of each layer.

3. Teacher modeling

- Pull out the presentation from last class and have a quick reminder for students

about what they have learned.

- Inform student about what they will be learn today, have the question “why the

Earth have several layers” on the board and ask student about it.
4

- After they answer the question, have them watch a YouTube video that introduce

about Earth’s layers.

- Give student a direct lecture about each layer of Earth and its characteristics.

4. Conducting Learning Probes:

- Have students sit in group of 5 or 4 and have each of them research about one

layer of the Earth, they can pick any of it but it can’t be duplicate. Then, after the

research, each of them will talk with peers in their group about what they have

learned from their research by English.

5. Independent Student Practice:

- Each student then returns to their seat and will make a poster that they will

describe (draw + word for explanation) and identify each layer of Earth including

all the layer, the name of each layer and their characteristics.

V. Materials

- Video that introduces about Earth’s layers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=WwiiOjyfvAU

- Slides show to give a full lecture about Earth’s layers

- Poster paper

- Color marker, black marker, pen and pencils.

VI. Grouping Structures

- Most of the time student will working on their own, except when they are in the

discussion, they will be in group of 5 or 4.

VII. Modification
5

Second Language Learner: I will try to be active with the student as much as possible

by English. If they can’t understand, they can ask me and I will explain for them in an

easy way like give an example or try to translate for them. In the activities, after

students tell their peers about what they have learned in the internet, I will have them

translate it by their primary language for their group as long as they all speak the

same language.

Dyslexia Learner: Instead of having him to go to the internet and read the

information, I will just let him/her watch some more video about it instead, so they

can learn by just watch and hear what the video is talking about and not have to read

too much.

Dysgraphia learner: Instead of having the student to use word to explain or describe

each layer, I can let that particular student draw icon to display what he/she trying to

tell in the poster.

VIII. Assessment

6. Assessing student progress/ culminating or closing activity:

- Student can answer the question “why Earth have several layers” and describe,

identify each layer of the Earth.

- I will know if students have met the objective for this lesson by their poster. If

their poster provides a clear explanation and describe by draw each layer of the

Earth.

7. Distributed Practice and Review: Student can have their poster to bring to their

home. If they can provide facts on whatever layers that they choose to have

research on, I will give extra point to each fact that they add more about layers of
6

the Earth. For the next class, I will have them read or present it to the class what

they have add more in so other students will learn it too.
