I. Stereotyping of Asian American
a. Asian Americans are often called the” model minority” because of their
remarkable educational, occupational and economic successes.
b. Often got labels like “Whiz kids” and “problem free”
c. Other stereotypes include viewing Asian Americans as proficient in mathematics

II.Culture Characteristic
a. Asian American children who have enculturated and maintained an ethic
socialization are characterized as introverted, shy, or formal during interethnic
interactions.
b. Physical contact such as holding hand between same sex is permissible, but it
may not if different sex.
c. Asian Americans often bow their head to show respect to elders, people of
authority.
d. Rarely touch other's heads or pass things over one another’s head.

III.Gender
a. In some Asian families, female do not receive the respect that males receive;
they are less value than males and do not receive the opportunities afforded to
males.
b. That lead to Asian female might show less motivation to succeed, more
reluctant to participate in class and less willing to excel academically.

a. Asian families emphasize loyalty to the family, not to bringing embarrassment or
shame to the family, this controls the behavior of family members.
b. Communication with adults is usually one way, children listening and adults
speaking.
c. Families teach their children to value educational achievement, to respect
authority, to feel responsible for relatives, and to show self-control.
d. Asian parents are more likely to decide whether their children should go to
college, “discuss” educational progress. They organize and structure their
children's lives to facilitate academic success.

V. Religion
a. Laotians, Cambodians and Vietnamese are predominantly Buddhist. Some
Vietnamese (and Chinese) however, are Taoist or Roman Catholic. Korean and
Japanese are a mix of Christian, Buddhist. Many Asian Americans continuously
embrace the philosophy of Confucianism.
b. As Asian Americans assimilate into the life of the US, many become Christians.
42% of Asian Americans say they are Christians, 14% are Buddhist, 10% are
Hindu, 4% are Muslim and 1% Sikh. Other religions is only 2%.
QUESTION FOR CHAPTER 6
 Rather than assuming that Asian Americans are “problem free,” outline the steps
that can be taken to learn about the unique weaknesses and strengths of individual
Asian Americans.
- Approach that student you want to learn about. Having a close relationship with that
particular student will help teacher to understand them better.
- Asian learners some time don’t like to speak at all, they usually quiet so having the
learner’s family assistance will be another way. Asian families have high respect for
teacher mean that teacher can gain assistance and support from it.
- Talk to them in private, many Asian student like to have communicate with teacher and
they tend to talk more when they in a private space with less people. And with the respect
they Asian student have for the teacher, they are more likely to express about themselves
