Subject or Topic: Properties of Matter Section

STANDARD:

3.2.3.A2 Recognize that all objects and materials in the world are made of matter.

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):

The third grade students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of matter by
answering 3 questions based on today’s lesson as an exit slip.

1. Matter – All substances that contain atoms and take up space;
matter includes solids, liquids, and gases ( Anything that takes
up space and has mass)

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction

1. The students will be given 2 post-it notes at their desks with the
instructions
1) Write your name on the post it notes then stand up
2) Wander around the room and stick the post it notes on two
things that they can see, smell, touch, or taste (but do not
taste).”
2. “What is Matter?” will be written on the board.
3. When the students have all placed their sticky notes have them meet
on the floor in the front of the classroom.
4. The students should be facing the chart paper set up in the front of the
room.

B. Development

1) The students will be seated in a circle on the carpet with their two sticky
notes
2) The teacher will go around the circle and write down where the students
put their sticky notes on the chart paper in no particular order
3) The teacher will pose the question, “Is there something that all the items
on the list have in common?”
4) The students can discuss this question
5) Based on the children’s answers in the discussion the teacher would then
proceed to tell the students that everything on the list is matter.
6) The students would be dismissed back to their seats and passed out a
guided notes paper
7) The teacher would begin a Prezi presentation on the basic facts about
matter.
8) The students will follow along filling in blanks and answering the
questions on the guided notes sheet.
9) When the power point is over the students will put their notes away and
will be put into groups of 4
10) Each group will then be given a piece of paper with a chart
11) The students will work as a group to categorize the items from their
original activity with the post it notes in to any categories they choose
12) When the students are finished their papers will be collect, to be used in
a later lesson.

C. Closure

1) The students will be sent back to their seats and introduced to their
performance assessment.
2) The rubric and instructions are attached.
3) The students will then be given a notecard.
4) The students will number the notecard 1-3.
5) The students will be asked 2 questions about the Matter Lesson as well
as asked to ask their own question.
i. What is matter?
ii. Name one state of matter?
iii. Think of one question you have about what we
learned about today.
6) The note cards will be collected, and used in the following lesson.
7) When the students are finished the teacher will describe their cumulative
performance assessment which is due at the end of the week.
8) The teacher will tell the students
i. The will be picking a piece of matter, anything
that they want
ii. They will then research and use what we learn
in class over this next week to create a poster
about their piece of matter
iii. The students will be graded on their information
as well as the display of their poster.

D. Accommodations/Differentiation

1) For student with disability provide guided notes, as well


as appropriate group selection and simplified tasks.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative – students will be graded on their answers on their note cards
and participation with the charts for sorting.
