Puri Agung Tabanan is the name of residence or castle of Raja Tabanan, which is one of castles
in Bali. It is located on Jalan Srigunting No.3 Tabanan, Bali. It is around 18 km from Denpasar
City.
At that time in Bali, the official residence of the king was called “Puri Agung”. The existence of
Puri Agung Tabanan was related to the figure of Arya Kenceng, who is believed to have come
along with Gajah Mada when Majapahit conquered Bedulu Kingdom in Bali, in 1343. Arya
Kenceng ruled Tabanan with a royal center or Puri Agung that is located in Pucangan (Buahan),
Tabanan.
Puri Agung and Batur Kawitan Temple in Pucangan then moved to Tabanan. Sirarya Ngurah
Langwang, the third king of Tabanan succeeded his father Sri Megada Natha to become king,
who then received an order from Raja Dalem Bali to move his Kingdom in Pucangan to the
south. Finally, Sirarya Ngurah Langwang got an inheritor, “Where there was smoke (Tabunan)
steaming, so there was the castle was built.”
Because the smoke was continued to rise from the well like Tabunan, so that the castle was given
named to Puri Agung Tabunan, and then change into Puri Agung Tabanan.
On September 27, 1906. During the Dutch colonial era, the kingdom of Tabanan was controlled
by the Dutch. On September 28, Puri Agung Tabanan was destroyed by the Dutch. And now the
constructions of the buildings looks more modern than before, because the old buildings was
destroyed by the Dutch in colonialization. and also the king of Puri Agung Tabanan is Cokorda
