about Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta city is one of the big cities in Java Island which is the capital and the central
government of Special Region of Yogyakarta province. Special Region of Yogyakarta is leaded by
The Sultan as the governor and Petahana Pakualam as the vice governor. Yogyakarta city is leaded by
a mayor. The name of Yogyakarta is taken from a word from Sanskrit language. It is “Ayogya” or
“Ayodha” which means peace or without a war. “A” means “no”, “yogya” refers to “yodha” or
“yudha” which means “a war”, and “karta” means “good”. Ayodha is one of the historical places for
India, which is the setting place where Ramayana, an ancient Sanskirt epic, happened. One of the sub-
districts in Yogyakarta, Kotagede, was the center of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom during 1575 -
1640. The palaces which are still functionate are The Kraton Ngayogyakarta and Puro Pakualaman,
which are the fractions of Mataram.

Yogyakarta is located in the valley of three rivers. They are Winongo River, Code River, and
Gajahwong River. This city is located about 600 kilometers from Jakarta, 116 kilometers from
Semarang, and 65 kilometers from Surakarta. The area of the city of Yogyakarta is 32.5 square
kilometer. The height of the city is 112 above sea level.

The location of the city is so strategic because it is located on the main routes. They are the
Southern Cross Route which connects Yogyakarta, Bandung, Surakarta, Surabaya, and cities in
southern Java, as well as the Yogyakarta-Semarang route, which connects Yogyakarta, Magelang,
Semarang, and cities in the middle of Java Island. Therefore, transportation in Yogyakarta is quite
sufficient to facilitate mobility between these cities. This city is easily reached by land and air
transportation. But there is no water transportation in this city since its location is quite far from the
sea (27 – 30 kilometers).

Now, I would like to inform you about our itinerary. Now we are leaving the airport for Prime
Plaza Hotel. We will arrive and check in at half past twelve. Prime Plaza Hotel is a unique
international resort-styled hotel with Javanese architecture. Lunch will be served at Srikaton
Restaurant. We will have lunch at Srikaton Restaurant, Prime Plaza Hotel. The restaurant offers
International and Indonesian dishes. It also performs traditional and modern live music. Then, we are
going to leave the hotel for Tamansari Watercastle. This place was formerly known as a pleasure
garden for the Sultan and his family. It was also functioned as a rest house for the royal family. We’ll
spend about 90 minutes there. From Tamansari watercastle, we’ll go down to Sultan;s Palace or
Kraton Yogyakarta. Sultan’s Palace or Keraton Yogyakarta is not only a home to king and hos family,
but also becomes the flame guard of Javanese culture. At 6 p.m, we will enjoy our dinner at Bale Raos
restaurant. It offers delicious traditional food which becomes Sultan’s dishes. At 7 p.m we are going
to visit Museum Sonobudoyo. It is a Javanese history and culture museum and library in Yogyakarta,
Indonesia. At 9 p.m we’ll go back to the hotel.

Ladies and Gentleman, our first destination is Tamansari Watercastle.

Taman Sari Yogyakarta or Taman Sari Keraton Yogyakarta is the site of the former palace
gardens or gardens of the Yogyakarta Palace. This garden was founded in the century of Sultan
Hamengku Buwono first in 1758-1765. Initially, the garden which was nicknamed "The Fragrant
Garden" has an area of more than 10 hectares with around 57 buildings in the form of buildings,
bathing pools, suspension bridges, water canals, as well as artificial lakes along with artificial islands
and underwater passages. The garden, which was used effectively between 1765-1812, originally
located from the southwest of the Kedhaton complex to the southeast of the Magangan complex. But
at this time, the remains of parts of Taman Sari that can be seen are only those in the southwest of the
Kedhaton complex.

Taman Sari was built in the former old palace, Pesanggrahan Garjitawati, which was founded
by Susuhunan Paku Buwono II as a resting place for horse-drawn carriages that would go to Imogiri.
As the head of the Taman Sari development project, Tumenggung Mangundipuro was appointed. All
construction costs are borne by the Regent of Madiun, Tumenggung Prawirosentiko, and all the
people. Therefore, the Madiun area is exempt from tax collection. In the middle of the construction of
the project leader was taken over by Prince Notokusumo, after Mangundipuro resigned. Although
officially as a royal garden, some buildings indicate that Taman Sari serves as the last stronghold if
the palace is attacked by enemies. It is said that one of the architects of this royal garden was a
Portuguese better known as Demang Tegis.

The Taman Sari complex can at least be divided into 4 parts. The first part is an artificial lake
located to the west. The next part is the building south of the artificial lake, including Umbul
Binangun Bath. The third part is Pasarean Ledok Sari and Garjitawati Pond which is located in the
south of the second part. The last part is the eastern part of the first and second parts and extends east
to southeast of the Magangan complex.

Located near the Kraton, this place was also known as the garden for the Sultan of
Yogyakarta. Tamansari was originally built for multiple purposes yet now only several buildings
remain. Some of its original functions were a place to rest, to meditate, to work, to hide and to defend
the Sultan’s family. In this present day, some of its buildings have now become homes for local
residents and only the mosque, resting and bathing space, and underground tunnels are accessible by
tourists.

With its combination of eastern and western style building, this unique escape of the royal
family has its own appeal and story. The most famous place in Tamansari is the bathing and resting
place of the Sultan and his Princesses named Umbul Pasiraman. Most tourists find this place
interesting as there is a unique story behind its origins.
Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I loves to go hunting during his free time and The Umbul
Pasiraman was designed to appease the Sultan of that desire. Different from the Panggung Krapyak
which was designed to hunt deer, the Umbul Pasiraman (which means a place to take a bath) was
designed for the Princesses to take a bath and for the Sultan to relax and ‘hunt’ for a wife.

To catch his ‘two-legged prey’, it is said that the Sultan would throw a rose from the high
tower on the south of the pool and the Princess who caught that rose will be his ‘wife’. Usually, the
ones who would catch the rose would either be the Queen or his concubines. There are three different
pools at Umbul Pasiraman namely Umbul Binangun, Umbul Muncar and Blumbang Kuras each a
different area for the daughters of Sultan and his potential wives to bathe.

Other than the Umbul Pasiraman, visitors can also explore an underground tunnel and
mosque. The tunnel was once a hideout but now is not functional as it is partially used for local
residences. Unlike most mosques, the mosque on this premise is a unique circle shaped building, with
Sumur Gumilang beneath which was a place for the Sultan to pray.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Our two-day Yogyakarta tour has just finished. I hope
that you all enjoyed our programs. Anybody still remember the places of interest and attractions to be
visited? Yes, Kraton… Tamansari…. Borobudu…Prambanan….Sonobudoyo…Taman
Budaya….Malioboro…Oh great you still remember them all. Which is the most attractive one?
Taman Budaya. Yes, I agree with you. If you love to see performance, I’d like to recommend you to
watch Sendratari Ramayana in your next visit. It is a night-show that combines dance and drama
without dialogue, based on the Ramayana story. It is performed near Prambanan Temple. You’ll love
it. On behalf of Habibi Tour and Travels, I would like to thank you for joining our tour. Thank you so
much for trusting us. I hope that it becomes a memorable tour. We do apologize for any
inconveniences you experienced. Thank you for our driver, Mr. Wawan and our co-driver, Mr.
Robert. Please double check your belongings to make sure that they are not left. Thank you. Good bye
and have a nice journey.

Prambanan is one of the most visited sites in Yogyakarta. Prambanan is a Hindu temple
complex comprised of hundreds of individual temples. Most are still in ruin due to earthquakes but
the largest and most important temples have been fully restored. I enjoyed Borobudur but I found
Prambanan to be more visually impressive.
