Identification of Learning Problem

2nd Grade students at Continental Colony Elementary School recently received one-to-one iPads

through a sponsored government grant program. The program will provide each student with a

personal iPad that will be assigned to them. Students will be allowed to take the iPads home. Due

to students having access to a personal technology device and less supervision it is important that

students understand what it means to be a digital citizen, practice internet safety, keep personal

information private, and understand cyberbullying. However, students have no prior background

knowledge on digital citizenship which presents a need for a digital citizenship collaborative

unit.

Learner Analysis

Continental Colony Elementary School is a title 1 school that is funded by the federal

government, and all students receive free and reduced lunch. The target population is 2nd grade,

and the class consists of 18 students. The target population has 13 boys and 8 girls from an

urban neighborhood in Atlanta, GA. All students are African American and are from an area that

is considered low income. Of the 21 students in the class 1 student is Tier 3, 4 students are Tier

2, and 13 students are Tier 1. Students in the SST (Student Support Team) process receive

interventions weekly. As well, 5 students have disabilities and are in the Department of Special

Education (DSE).

Task Analysis
Due to the nature of this unit both topic analysis and procedural analysis will be used in this unit.

Topic analysis includes the content that will be included in instruction and the structure of the

content. Procedural analysis includes the steps needed to complete a task. In order for students to

be successful with the iPads a topic analysis will be conducted so that students understand what

it means to be digital citizens, how to be safe online, and how to recognize and respond to

cyberbullying. Once students are able to meet the instructional goals they will be able to apply

their new skills to recognize good websites v. bad websites and cyberbullying, as well as how to

respond to cyberbullying.
