5 a) What is the significance of Joule- Thomson coefficient ? prove that Joule Thomson effect is
the result from the deviation of Joule’s law and Boyle’s law.

b) A certain liquid boils at 400 K at a pressure of 80 cm of Hg. It has a latent heat of vaporization
of 1000 cal/mole. At what temperature will it boil if the pressure is raised to 81 cm of Hg?

6. a)Using Biot-Savart law, deduce an expression for the magnetic induction at a distance x
along the axis of a flat circular coil carrying current i.
Hence, show that two thin coaxial coils, separated by a distance, each having the same radius and
the same number of turns and carrying the same current can be used to obtain a nearly constant
magnetic field over a considerable distance near the axial midpoint.
Mention the name of the instrument built by using this principle.
b) State Ampere’s circuital law and show that the law is independent of the shape of the path.

7. a) Differentiate between Dead beat galvanometer and Ballistic galvanometer.
b) When the two plates of a lossless capacitor of capacitance 1 microfarad are joined by an
unknown resistance, the charge on it falls to 50% of its initial value in 5 minutes. Find out the
value of the resistance.
c) Self-inductance of two coils are L1 and L2 respectively and their mutual inductance is M. By
consideration of the principle of conservation of energy, show that in general M2 cannot be
greater than the product L1 L2 .
d) Explain the meaning of external critical damping resistance .

the impedance of the circuit. How does it vary with the frequency of the input source?
b) Explain physically why the reactance of inductor increases and that of a capacitor decreases
with the increase in frequency?
c) Discuss the principle of measurement of the frequency of an a.c source by using Wien’s

9. a)Explain why no transients are produced in pure resistive circuits.

voltage. Is the output power greater than the input power?
d) How does Peltier heating differ from Joule heating? “The Thompson co-efficient of a metal is
