necessary.

P ⇒ R ∧ [¬Q ∨ (Q ⇔ ¬P )]

II. NEGATING STATEMENTS. (2 points each) Give the negation of the following.

2. (∃n ∈ N)(P (n) ⇒ Q(n))
3. There exists a rational number rs.t. 1r is irrational.
4. For every real number x, x2 > 0.
5. For every > 0 there exists a δ > 0 such that if |x − 1| < δ then |x2 − 1| < .

II. PROVING. Provide NEAT and COMPLETE solutions for the following problems. Incomplete
solutions will not be given full credit. NOTE: Don’t forget to write your ASSUMPTION,
what you NEED TO SHOW, and your CONCLUSION.

3. (4 points) Prove that if 5x − 4 is odd then 3x + 1 is even.
4. (5 points) Use mathematical induction to prove that for any positive integer n,

n(n + 1)(2n + 1)
