GIVEN:

Zo = 4 – 3j
ZL = 8 + 2j

PROCEDURES
1. Get the Resistance Component (R or Z’) then plot the points:
ZL 8+ 2 j 8.25∠ 14.04
Z’ = Z = 4−3 j = 5 ∠−36.87 = 1.65∠ 50.91 = 1.04 + 1.28j

2. Draw a straight line from the origin or the centre of the Smith Chart and then the
intersection formed by the Z’ and up to the Angle of Reflection Coefficient in Degrees.
3. Record the angle you get and check it using the formula for reflection coefficient in polar
form.

Vr z L −z o 8+2 j−4+3 j
r = V = z + z = 8+2 j+4−3 j = 0.53∠ 56.10 = 0.3 + 0.44j

INTERSECTION

4. Using a compass, draw a circle having the radius from centre to the intersection formed
in the Smith Chart.

5. Draw a straight line from the most left of the circle you draw using compass in
downward stroke up to the Radially Scaled Parameter and then Record the data.

6. You can check that the solved reflection coefficient and its angle can also be recorded
using the Smith Chart from the Radially Scaled Parameters.
7. For checking the other parameters, here are the formulas and solutions.
r pwr =¿ r ∨¿2=0.3532 =0.1296 ¿
RTNL =¿ 10 log 10 r pwr ∨¿∨10 log 10 ( 0.1296 )∨¿ 9.0

SWR = 1+r = 1−0.3 = 1.85

Based on the computations and actual graphing using smith chart, both have
the same answer. Therefore, any of the method can be used without hesitation of
getting the answers. The advantage of the Smith Chart is that it can solve
transmission line problems very quickly; also, it forces you to understand how to
match a load to the transmitter. If you practice using the Smith Chart to solve
transmission line matching issues, you will be comfortable with all sorts of related
problems. Furthermore, Smith Chart can be applied to other RF devices and other
microwave elements where a specific parameter — like impedance, power, or line
loss.
