Study Questions

1. What alternatives did Uber have to address regulatory issues when beginning service
in new cities? What are the benefits and difficulties with each?

2. How do you expect the incumbent taxi operators to respond to the Uber’s entry into D.C.?

3. What should Uber do in the face of the proposed D.C. legislation

Answers:

1. An alternative would have been that Uber before launching into the market began
maintaining communication with officials to learn in this way how the business can
legally operate in the area before launching its services and better understand the legal
structure existing in the transport industry. Another alternative would have been to ask
the market for help from connoisseurs who have connections with regulatory authorities.
This could have saved Uber many legal problems.

2. We can expect the predominant taxi drivers and operators to see Uber's entry into the
D.C market feel pressured against the competition. Before the classic taxi operators could
be contacted, either by calling the street or by prior arrangement, however, with Uber
opposing this regulation, taxis now face competition not only in that aspect but also in
aspects such as comfort and safety, the payment method and a more covered area wide.
Thus, taxi operators are expected to reduce their prices to compete with Uber prices.

3. First of all, Uber should try to get a new law project to adapt properly to the services they provide,
giving them greater flexibility to offer lower cost services to customers.

Among other things, Uber should not oppose the established legislation in a negative way since it will be
in this gray regulatory area, which can lead to many problems such as fines for faults among other
corresponding sanctions. The opposition is negative as it can affect Uber's reputation among the general
public. This could lead Uber to typecast in a single market area and leave other important areas.
