Comprehend
text
What is reading comprehension?
It refers to the ability to read text,
process it, and understand its
meaning
It shows the level of
understanding of a text or
message
It depends on individual cognitive
development (the construction of
thought process)
Why is it so important?
Without comprehension, reading is nothing more than tracking
symbols on a page with your eyes and sounding them out

Imagine being handed a story written in Egyptian hieroglyphics

with no understanding of their meaning.

Reading comprehension is important because without it

reading doesn’t provide the reader with any information.
Before Reading
Sets a goal
Thinks about and jots down
predictions
Gets all the materials before
start reading
Each reason will
influence the way you
read e.g. quickly or
slowly, looking for fact
or opinion.
During Reading
Stays focused and on task the
entire time
Asks and answers questions
Stops and jots down your
thinking while you are reading
Vocabulary
With the new words which you think are important:

If an approximate meaning is enough,

Try to guess the meaning using word function, context
(immediate and wider) and word form
If the exact meaning is needed,
Use a dictionary
Ask another student, or your tutor
After Reading
Writes about your reading in a
journal
Talks about reading with a friend
Makes a plan for what they want
to read next
