did car technology "freeze" during the World Wars? Considering most car factories
were repurposed for the war effort, and some even were in the war effort before WW2
broke out (Sino-japanese war, spanish civil war...)
big examples being the Beetle or the Citroen 2CV wich were mostly designed in the
30's

>did car technology "freeze" during the World Wars?
the development of direct injection for aircraft engines led to some progress i
guess.
i suppose there have been some developments in materials technology as well.

ive heard that it was only in 1948 that the first "all new" design car in USA was
released, and i imagine it was much later for the countries in europe that were
broke and/ordestroyed from war

In January 1946 the regular series production of the standard limousine (type 11
Brezelkäfer) started. The cars went partly to the British occupying power and
partly to German authorities. Private individuals were initially unable to buy new
cars. Exports began the following year. Ben Pon senior became general importer for
the Netherlands on 8 August 1947 and sold 51 cars by the end of the year. He also
provided the food for thought for the VW Transporter, called "Type 2". After
repairing war damage and under the influence of the currency reform on 20 June
1948, production was increased to 19,244 units in 1948; in 1947, vehicle production
had only reached 8,987 units.

1946 Post-war production begins with panel vans, ambulances and police vehicles
based on the Mercedes-Benz 170 V.

In the period from 1949 to 1960, Daimler-Benz AG succeeded in regaining the

position it had maintained before the Second World War in the rapidly growing
German automotive industry. By 1954, the company had already reached the one
billion euro mark in sales, thus setting a new sales record.

the World War II German occupation of France
probably the same for peugeot 203

prior to ww1 there was very military little interest in high performance engines or
aircraft
after ww1 the need abated so a bunch of race cars used the old aero engines
this kept the engines in use and development until the next war broke out .esp in
Italy and France
and throughout ww2 south Italy did not stop motor racing

after ww1 Germany was forbidden from developing military technology

and had lost some of their largest industrial equipment to reparations
they could only produce items that gave some lip service to having a civilian use
or sporting use
and could only have the means to produce large amounts by ignoring debits and
reparations + issuing their own unbaked currency

interwar / immediately leading up to the outbreak of world war 2 the only upscale
automotive developments also had a military purpose
outside of this an emerging focus on small cars was created by the aftermath of the
Great depression

post ww2 saw a retraction in the demand for aircraft's

so many heavy industry turned to motor cars and motor cycles
Mercides and Jaguar are most known for this
but also BMW and to a lesser extent AUDI and Messerchmitt
also many people were impoverished after ww2

>Beetle
commandeered en mass by the military as staff cars
converted into military variants of kubelwagen and schwimmwagen and Porsche 597
Jagdwagen 4x4

>Citroen 2CV
hidden in barns prior to the fall of France
pressed into military service late war

Design work on new cars was going on in Detroit during the war and the main thing
delaying them until 48-49 was problems getting factories back to normal peacetime
production. Raw materials were in short supply and there were multiple huge labor
strikes.
