OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

Thomas Nelson Community College Dental Hygiene Students will be providing oral health
education to our seniors in March! The students will be with us on Tuesday afternoons to
speak with interested community members about how to maintain a healthy mouth.

ORAL HEALTH CHANGES WITH AGING

Dental conditions associated with aging include dry mouth, cavities, and gum disease;
increased sensitivity to drugs used in dentistry, including local anesthetics. Potential
physical, sensory, and cognitive impairments associated with aging may make home oral
health care challenging. Although better than in years past, the typical aging patient’s
baseline health can be complicated by comorbid conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes
mellitus) and physiologic changes associated with aging.
