COATING MANUAL

INTRODUCTION Due to advanced requirements and expectations when constructing new

industrial installations, the coating industry has introduced a number of new
types of paints and protective coatings. These paints – when applied correctly –
will last longer and hence, reduce maintenance and cost.

Paint systems can be divided into two groups; standard types and
advanced types.

The advanced paint systems offer advantages that require that they should be
considered at the earliest possible stage and certainly whilst the construction is
being designed. These advanced paints require much more careful application if
their optimum protective performance is to be achieved.

The Jotun products described on the following pages have been separated into
distinct types of paint. All have been designed and formulated to fulfil certain aims.

Every product is the result of intensive research and development. Jotun invests
many millions of dollars in its dedicated laboratory complex in Norway. Added
to this are research centre and regional laboratories in the Middle East and
South East Asia.

This state-of-the-art technology combines with innovative thinking, practical

knowledge and experience. It ensures that Jotun will maintain its position at the
leading edge of protective and marine coatings development.

The products described have been tried and proven in laboratory and outdoor
exposure, in practical trials and in-service in every place in the world.

The product range is supported by fully trained coating advisors on hand world-
wide to assist and advise customers in the selection of the products which will
most effectively achieve their aims.

ANTIFOULINGS Jotun provides an extensive range of antifoulings. The most relevant products
for the offshore/FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading units)
market is, however:

Seamate HB 99 (in Norway Seamate HB 88 is used)

Designed especially to provide protection where there are short distances in
service, frequent port calls or for laid up ships. It gives excellent performance in
strongly polluted harbours and where the speed of the vessel or water flow is low.

Its effective lifetime is limited only by the film thickness applied. It has a high
polishing rate and therefore is not normally recommended as more than a 36
month system or for vessels sailing at over 18 knots.

Seamate HB 66
Provides long term antifouling protection at speeds between 6 and 18 knots. It
controls the development of fouling for up to 60 months.

SeaQuantum
An advanced tin-free selfpolishing antifouling based on a proven and
non-harmful silyl polymer that hydrolyses in seawater – a technology from
NOF Corporation.

The SeaQuantum paint film maintains a constant linear polishing rate for a
period of up to five years – providing antifouling performance that is equal to or
better than the very best TBT-containing antifoulings. After the initial
roughness is polished away, the smoothness of the hull is maintained and fuel
costs are saved.
