Sir L. A. Shah Law College organizes Internal Moot Court Compe on

Moot Court : Meaning

Moot Court is an ar ficial Court wherein an atmosphere of


court is created in the class-room of a law college itself.
The law students are arguing a given hypothe cal case as if
they are arguing actual case before the court on behalf of
their clients. The law students are trained before
presen ng a case at the Moot Court about the mannerism
of the court. They are taught about maintaining the
decorum of court. The professors are discharging du es as
judges at the compe on. For the final round the si ng
Judges or re red Judges of the High Court and also senior
Advocates are invited to act as Judges at the Moot Court
Compe on.

How Moot Court differs from Mock Court ?

In a Mock Court a drama of court is being performed. It


has less academic importance. The main purpose of Mock
Court is to entertain the audience. Moot Court is arranged
for giving prac cal training and guidance to the law
students about the court prac ce. The students have to
argue as if they are arguing before real court. The students
are given marks by observing their performance. There
cannot be humorous or light atmosphere in Moot Court.
To appraise the students about presen ng the case and
preparing wri en submission and arguing a given case
from either side before the court is the main purpose of
Moot Court Compe on.

Importance of Moot Court in Law Colleges

The skill of presenta on, appropriate and logical response to the spontaneous query of Judges and art of advocacy are must in order to become successful
students are trained here to present case with confidence and clarity before the judges. Before presen ng the case before the judges at the Moot Court, pro
giving special training about the study of Moot Problem and how to find out the Legal Points and Factual Points for the arguments. The students also prepare th
(Wri en Submission) to be presented before the judges. Thus, the art of dra ing a case can be developed among the students. The students are also tau
address the Judges at the court, what to speak in the court and also what not to speak. In the new syllabus of LL.B. Program, Moot Court is one of the subjects
semester. Instead of taking theore cal examina on in the above subject, the student has to present given hypothe cal cases before the court and they are giv
marks based upon their performance at the compe on.

Moot Court Ac vi es in the College

Sir L. A. Shah College takes keen interest in impar ng prac cal training to the law students along with giving theore cal knowledge. The first Moot Court Comp
arranged at Sir L. A. Shah Law College in the year 1935. Since then the college every year organizes Moot Court Compe ons.

Training in moot courts leads to a be er and fuller understanding of the purpose and procedure of Law, as well as develops advocacy skills in an environment
compe on. The College holds moot court compe ons for the students every year as well as par cipates at the Inter- Collegiate and inter university co
organized at the state or na onal level.

The students of the College par cipated, as representa ves of Gujarat University, in the All India Inter University Moot Court Compe on organized every yea
Council of India thirteen mes during the last fi een years (1997-2011).

In the memory of eminent advocate Shri I. M. Nanava , the College every year organizes “Late Shri I. M. Nanava Inter Law Collegiate Moot Court Compe o
all the law colleges affiliated to Gujarat University par cipates. The si ng or re red Judges of the High Court or the Supreme Court of India are invited to act as

Prepara on at the Moot Court Compe on

The students of the college were distributed a copy of a moot problem – a hypothe cal case for the purpose of prepara on taking into considera on the releva
decided cases of the High Court and the Supreme Court of India. The Moot Problem is prepared in such a way there can be ample scope of arguments on variou
either side. A student has to argue case by choosing any one side as if he/she is arguing a case presen ng the client in the court. Every student is given a definit
within which he/she has to complete the arguments, legal submissions, cita on of relevant cases alongwith the prayer.

A er having circulated the Moot Problems the College organizes special lectures to acquaint the students about how to present the case before any court. The
of prac sing advocates who are contribu ng their services as a part me lecturers/visi ng faculty is taken to provide prac cal guidance to the students.

Priliminary Round of Moot Court Compe on

The College has as a part of its president and prac ce, in the academic year 2012-13 organized Internal Moot Court Compe on. The students were given Mo
and they were given special training by the faculty members viz. Prof. Nayanaben B. Bha , Prof. M. S. Shah, Prof. Nishant Lalakia etc. The above professors
special interest in giving proper informa on and guidance about the Moot Court Compe on. Looking to the enthusiasm of the students, the en re comp
divided into two rounds. About 60 students have par cipated at the Moot Court Compe on. The students were divided among five courts. On 22nd Augus
Priliminary Round of the Internal Moot Compe on was organized, wherein 10 part- me as well as visi ng professors have rendered their services as the ju
Compe on. Prof. K. H. Baxi, Prof. M. S. Shah, Prof. N. B. Bha , Prof. A. N. Bha , Prof. D. G. Shukla, Prof. V. M. Pancholi, Prof. R. F. Bhagat, Prof. M. N. Bhavsar
Shekhavat and Prof. Nishant Lalakia rendered their valuable services as the judges at the First round of Internal Moot Court Compe on. Five Parallel C
cons tuted comprising of above ten professors. Out of 60 par cipants 8 best candidates were selected to present the case for the final round.

Final Round of Moot Court Compe on

On 25th August, 2012 the Final Round of the Internal Moot Court Compe on was arranged wherein Hon’ble Mr. Jus ce Anant S. Dave, Judge, High Court of
Hon’ble Mr. Jus ce A. J. Desai, Judge, High Court of Gujarat were invited to act as the judges. Both the Honourable Judges have willingly consented. It is per n
that both the above Judges are the bright alumnus of Sir L. A. Shah Law College. Each par cipant was given 10 minutes to present his/her case before the Divisi
the Moot Court Compe on. During the course of arguments both the Hon’ble Judges have raised ques ons to the par cipants on factual and legal aspects o
Problem. Students have not only effec vely responded to the queries of the judges but they have even cited various relevant judgments of the Supreme Cour
support of their arguments. To appear before the si ng High Court Judges was a unique experience for each par cipant and also the law students witnesse
compe on also enjoyed the en re compe on. By taking into considera on the General Impression, Substance in Arguments, Advocacy and Memorial the Ju
select the three Best Speakers from the Compe on. A er listening to the arguments of all the par cipants, the Hon’Ble Judges have selected Three Best Spe
Eight finalists and also gave prizes. All the sixty par cipants of the first round of the Internal Moot Court Compe on were given Cer ficate of Par cipa on by
Judges. A er the Moot Court Compe on both the judges had an interac on with the par cipant students and they were given useful ps and sugges ons by
Judges about the presenta on of the case and court mannerism. At last both the Hon’ble Judges appreciated the efforts, skill and hard work of all the par cip
compe on.

Moot Court and other academic Ac vi es

To find out the best talent from the students the college organized Internal Moot Court Compe on wherein about 58 students have par cipated. Eight stu
selected for the final round of the internal Moot Court Compe on. Hon’ble Mr. Jus ce K. M. Mehta, Former Judge, High Court of Gujarat and Shri N
Former Director, Gujarat University School of Law and Former Director, Ins tute of Law Nirma University were invited as the Judges at the compe on.
A special lecture of Shri Pradeep Seth was organized for the law students appraising them about the opera on and facili es available at the Legal So w
importance thereof on 24-8-2013.
Sir L. A. Shah Law College every year organizes Inter Collegiate Moot Court Compe on in the memory of eminent Advocate Shri I. M. Nanava . On 11th Ja
the college organized Late Shri I. M. Nanava Inter Law Collegiate Moot Court Compe on invi ng all the law colleges affiliated to the Gujarat Univers
Colleges have par cipated and the group of students from all the law colleges was invited to view the Moot Court Compe on. Hon’ble Mr. Jus ce S. H. V
High Court of Gujarat and Hon’ble Mr. Jus ce G. R. Udhwani, Judge, High Court of Gujarat were invited as the Judges at the above compe on. Ms.
student of Sir L. A. Shah Law College was declared as the Second Best Speaker of the compe on and was awarded prize.
Students of the College, Ms. Neha Vyas and Ms. Sairica Raju par cipated at the 3rd INLU Interna onal Moot Court Compe on organized by the Ins t
Nirma University during February 14-16, 2014.
The Moot Court Team of Sir L. A. Shah Law College comprising of A. T. Viivek (Mooter), Yashashvi Soni (Mooter) and Ankit Patel (Researcher) has won the Th
well as Rs.25,000/- cash prize at the 2nd Na onal Moot Court Compe on, 2018 organized by L. J. Ins tute of Law during January 19-21, 2018. The College
Team has also won the First Prize of Best Memorial at the above compe on as well as cash prize of Rs. 10,000/-.
Students of the College A. T. Vivek and Soni Yashashvi secured first and second rank at Inter Law College Moot Court Compe on organized by the Gujara
and represented the Gujarat University at All India Moot Court Compe on organized by the Bar Council of India in the year 2017-18.
Students of the College Ms. Anamika Devani and Ms. Kajal Chand secured Second and Third rank at Inter Law College Moot Court Compe on organized by
University and selected to represent the Gujarat University at All India Moot Court Compe on organized by the Bar Council of India in the year 2018-19.
