TECHNIQUES

CLT techniques:
 Authentic materials
The teacher has to use authentic materials to give to the students, so the students can use
the knowledge they obtain in the classroom in real-life situation.
 Opinion sharing
In this activity students can engage and train their conversational skills, while sharing
their opinion on a certain topic.
Example:
1. The teacher introduces a topic and ask the student to contemplate their opinion
about it
2. The student talk in pair or small groups, debating their opinions regarding the
topic.
 Language game
Games are often used in CLT method, a good game that can be enjoyed and used in
developing a good communication skill.
Example:
1. The teacher gives a card that has a certain topic or material to every student.
2. Then the student will search the info of that topic and talk about it in front of the
class.
 Scavenger hunt
This activity is a mingling activity that promotes open interaction between students
Example:
1. The teacher will give students a sheet with instruction on it. (find your friend
birthday etc).
2. Students go around the classroom asking and answering question about each
other.
3. The students wish to find all of the answer they need to complete the scavenger
hunt.
In doing this activity, student have the opportunity to speak with a number of classmates,
while still being in low pressure situation, and will be more comfortable in engage in
communicative activities.

 Role-play
Role play is very important in the CLT activities. Role play is an oral activity usually
done in pairs, whose main goal is to develop student’s communicative abilities in a
certain setting
Example:
1. The teacher set the scene where the conversation taking place.
2. The teacher defines the goal of the conversation (asking for directions, offering
help, etc).
3. The student converse in pairs for a designated amount of time.
This activity gives students the chance to improve their communication skill in the TL in
low pressure situation.
 Interviews
Interview is an oral activity done in pairs, whose main goal is to develop student’s
interpersonal skill
Example:
1. Teacher gives each student the same set of question to ask to their partner.
2. Student take turn in asking and answering the question in pairs.
 Group work

Group work is a collaborative activity whose purpose is to foster communication in a larger


group setting

Example:

Students are assigned a group of no more than six people.

Students are assigned a specific role within the group. (E.g., member A, member B, etc.)

The instructor gives each group the same task to complete.


Each member of the group takes a designated amount of time to work on the part of the task to
which they are assigned.

The members of the group discuss the information they have found, with each other and put it all
together to complete the task.

CBLT techniques

 Selected response in response to prompt, the students chose an answer from among those
given. Simply student recall or recognize information required to select appropriate
response
Example:
1. Multiple choice test
2. True-false
3. Fill in the blank

 Constructed response:
Student construct an answer out of old and new knowledge in environment like real life
situation. Student constructing new knowledge that likely differs slightly or significantly
from that constructed by other students.

 Product-like
Student create a product by constructing from old or new knowledge to finally apply,
analyze, synthesize or evaluate those concept and skill to reach the goal.

1. Essay writing
2. Paragraph writing
3. Stories writing.
4. Poems
5. Film analysis
6. Letters
7. Video
8. Books
9. Paper editing

 Performance-like
In response to the assignment/series of assignment student construct a performance that
reveals their understanding of a certain concept and skills & their ability to apply, analyze
or evaluate those concept and skills that is more substantial in depth and length.
Example:
1. Musical audition.
2. Dramatic performance.
3. Material presentations.
4. Panel discussion.
5. Self-introduction
6. Interviews
7. Speeches
8. Role-plays
