UNIT OVERVIEW

The course of this unit will cover two direct instruction lessons followed by a cooperative learning lesson. In the first two, students will be given a
Unit Description close look at grammatical functions, with the second day delving into the difficult subject of clauses. The last day will allow students to work
collaboratively using their newly acquired knowledge to apply complex punctuation to unpunctuated sentences.

Throughout the lessons, students will develop a strong understanding of grammatical functions that goes beyond what they did in elementary or
middle school. They will be refreshed on certain subjects while thinking critically about how different words, phrases, and clauses function in

sentences. They will also use these skills to learn about complex punctuation. These combined skills will help them gain mastery over the English
language and give them more avenues of articulation in their writing.
