Language Acquisition Autobiography 2

Reading, writing, listening, and speaking—all language-based competencies included in

English Language Arts—have become prerequisites for participation in nearly every aspect of

day-to-day, 21st century life. While there was a time when basic literacy skills provided a clear

path forward, today's students need to develop an increasingly complex set of advanced literacy

skills and competencies in order to access social and economic opportunities, find and use

information, and meet personal goals. (New York State Education, 2016)

Early Years

I actually don’t have to many early childhood memories. I have talked to people that can

remember when they were two and they were here or there. I don’t know why I can’t remember

a lot of my childhood. I can say that my mother had three children by the age of 21 and I was the

middle child. I have two brothers. My brothers taught me the most. I grew up in a family that

was very cuddly and or affectionate. I don’t have any memories of us sitting and reading together

or even working on homework together. Now, having children myself I make it a point to read to

my children every night and I take lots of pictures and videos so that my children have these

memories as they get older.

Parenting

I can remember it like it was yesterday. The day both of my children said their first

words. My daughters first word was “momma” and my son’s first word were “dadda”. Those

moments for any parents are one of the most amazing moments you will experience. From that

point on we spend out time teaching our children basic language skills We start with easy words

and then move to phrases. Our children learn on their own how to put words together. For my

husband and I, we have been reading to our children every single night since they were born.

This helps children memorize words.

Language in Life

Language is an important part of our everyday lives. It is an exceptional human gift

which allows us to communicate and separates us from other primates. Language is so much

more than just a means of communication. It is also a devoted part of all cultures. `

Theories of Language

It is said that early language and literacy begin to develop within the first three years of

life. Children are little sponges so reading to them and constant communication is key. There are

many theories related to language. These stages include, Early Literacy, The Emergent Reader,

The Early Reader, The Transitional Reader, The Self-Extending Reader, and The Advanced

Reader. Early Literacy. At this stage, during a child’s early years (2-5 years old), parents are

integral to early literacy foundation. (Chris O. 2011)

My career.

Language is a major part of my career. I am a SEBT (special education behavioral tech)

for middle school students and quiet a few of them are nonverbal. We use their AAC devices to

communicate with them. We allow them to work with peer and communicate as much as

possible. We work on basic greeting daily and must repeat sentences we say so that they can

work on putting words together. We are getting these students ready for high school and their

futures.
