Mixed construction" is a fancy way to say that


your sentence doesn’t make sense.

A mixed construction happens when you


start a sentence with one construction and
finish it with another.
Common Errors
● Comma Splices

Incorrect: The girl wanted to get a dog, her brother wanted to adopt a cat.

Correct : The girl wanted to get a dog, but her brother wanted to adopt a
cat.

● Run-on Sentences

Incorrect: Dinner is ready we'll be eating in just a few minutes.

Correct: Dinner is ready. We'll be eating in just a few minutes.


Learning

1. Start by proofreading not only your own texts but also


everything you notice around you. Develop a habit of
reading when you're commuting because it sure needs
analysis!

2. You can use different programs to help you punctuation


and grammar such as a word document or grammarly to
help you.

Confusing: The reason for Smith’s firing is because he lied in his employment
application.

Revision 1: Smith was fired because he lied in his employment application.

Revision 2: The reason for Smith’s firing is his lying in his employment
application.
