Composite structural reinforcement for masonry structures

Composite reinforcements
Composite systems are the result of union of a long high-
performance fibre (carbon) with a matrix which serves as an
adhesive to convey stress to the fibre.

Thanks to the outstanding mechanical properties of carbon,

this technology allows engineers to reduce deformation and
flexural stress, while increasing loads on beams, floor slabs,
pillars, etc. in masonry constructions.

Composite reinforcements are also highly versatile and combine

practicality with low applied cost, especially in comparison with
traditional technologies (beton plaqué, reinforced slabs, tie rods
and steel chains).

Their light weight makes them perfect for use on particularly

degraded structures (such as masonry vaults, dividing walls,
etc.) without creating an additional load with their weight on
constructions which are already compromised.

Ruredil now has developed Ruredil X Mesh C10, an innovative

structural reinforcement system, free from epoxy resins, based
on a stabilized inorganic matrix.

Research and development, conducted in this field by leading all tensions. But, unfortunately, it is a well-known fact that epoxy
companies such as Mitsubishi and Ruredil, have resulted in resins have their limitations, due to their chemical properties,
development of a technology which is extremely easy to use which affect both their application and their fire-resistance:
and offers guaranteed results (especially in comparison with
• they cannot be applied to damp substrates;
traditional beton plaqué or handicraft techniques).
• they cannot be applied at temperatures lower than +10 °C or higher
than +30 °C, because the catalysis reaction (hardening) suffers greatly,
making it difficult to work with them;
• they are not fire-resistant because, once they harden, they melts
at temperatures between 110 °C and 150 °C, thus causing the fibres
to detach from the structure and making the structural reinforcement
useless;
• they are not high temperature-resistant because epoxy resins even at
temperatures lower then 80 °C (common glass transition temperature)
loose drastically bending capacity, thus causing the same effects as in
case of fire.
Use of these FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) structural reinforce-
ments must therefore be assessed taking into consideration the
intrinsic limitations of the epoxy matrix which, to guarantee ad-
hesion to the substrate, must be applied in a particular way and
protected from fire adequately.

Loss of efficiency of a structure may have two causes:

• degradation of materials, such as, for example, a decrease

in the features of the resistant section and the section of the
metal reinforcement;

• overload due to changes in use or to external events, such as

earthquakes.

In either case, it is possible to intervene by applying

composite reinforcement systems (on the basis of pre-
determined calculations and dimensioning) so that stress,
resulting from tension and overloads, is transferred through
an epoxy resin to a long carbon fibre capable of absorbing
tensions.

Tests
The Ruredil X Mesh C10 system has been subjected to
a complete series of tests conducted by authoritative
university research institutes, which have checked its
efficacy with strict tests. The results of the tests are
recorded in certificates demonstrating the efficacy of the
innovation.

In masonry structures in particular, application of Ruredil

X Mesh C10 increases resistance to shearing stress
from 55% up 251% depending on the number of layers
of carbon mesh used.

In all situations use of Ruredil X Mesh C10 also allows works

resistant to high temperatures (such as fires) thanks to
replacement of the epoxy resin matrix, typical of traditional
FRPs, with a hydraulic cementitious matrix.

Ruredil X Mesh C10: since 2001, when it was launched

on the Italian market, more then 300.000 m2 have been
applied on all kinds of masonry structures, a lot of them on
special historical or artistic value buildings.
