Attachment styles can be thought of in two ways. The traditional way is to conceptualize them as traits
relatively enduring ways of characterizing our relationships with important people in our lives. (You can see
your attachment trait results in the results pulldown menu.) Another way to conceptualize attachment styles
is as statesthoughts and feelings that might change quickly as we move from one situation to the next. For
example, if you were to get into an argument with a loved one, you might feel that other people don't fully
understand you. In that momentor in the moments following the argumentyou might feel more insecure,
even if you're not more insecure in general (i.e., in a traitlike way).
One of the surveys you tookthe SAAMis designed to assess attachmentrelated states. The SAAM
measures three attachmentrelated states:
security When you're in a secure state, you feel that others are available and responsive to you
anxiety When you're in a state of attachment anxiety, you feel that others may not be as attentive to
or invested in you as you would like
avoidance When you're in a state of avoidance, you may feel uncomfortable opening up to and
depending on others
The graph above illustrates your recent scores for each of these three attachmentrelated states. The scores
can range from 1 (low) to 5 (high). Your scores are represented by the dark blue bars. For example, your
score for security was 3.2. For the purposes of comparison, we have also graphed the average score for
other people who have taken this survey. (This information updates in real time, so if you check back later,
the numbers might be slightly different.) As you can see from this graph, your sense of security is less than
that of the average person who has taken this survey.
