MEM634 LAB WORK FOR OPEN & DISTANCE LEARNING (ODL)

NON-FACE-TO-FACE MODE
SEMESTER MAR-JUL 2020

NOTE: This lab work is designed for Individual Student’s Effort.

EQUIPMENT 1: SOUND LEVEL METER (SLM)

INTRODUCTION:
A sound level meter (SLM) is a measuring instrument used to assess noise or sound levels
by measuring sound pressure. Often referred to as a sound pressure level (SPL) meter, decibel
(dB) meter, noise meter or noise dosimeter, a sound level meter uses a microphone to capture
sound. The sound is then evaluated within the sound level meter and acoustic measurement
values are shown on the display of the sound level meter. The most common unit of acoustic
measurement for sound is the decibel (dB); however, some sound level meter devices also
determine the equivalent continuous sound level (Leq) and other acoustic parameters.
With a portable sound level meter, industrial hygiene and workplace safety professionals
can measure sound levels in multiple locations to ensure environmental conditions fall within
recommended exposure limits (RELs). Some sound level meter devices can be permanently
installed for continuous monitoring of sound levels at a work or job site.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To conduct a hypothetical (theoretical) lab work involving a portable Sound Level Meter (SLM).
2. To study all the components and functions of the complete system of the SLM.
3. To be able to use the portable SLM to measure noise levels in the workplace.
4. To be able to analyse and draw conclusions from the use of SLM in the work site.

used to measure noise levels in the workplace.

PROCEDURE:
1. Search at least 5 references for data and information from the internet regarding the usage and
application of the SLM.
2. Your references should have ample data on noise level data collected by using an SLM at specific
locations in the work place.
3. These data will be your main reference for your lab report.

LAB REPORT REQUIREMENTS:

You will then be required to write up a report detailing the following headings:
1. Acknowledgment
2. Table of Contents
3. List of Figures
4. List of Tables
5. List of Symbols and Abbreviations
6. Main Body of Report
a. Introduction of SLM equipment
i. Name or model of SLM equipment
ii. Photos or images of the SLM complete equipment set with labelling
iii. Function/purpose of SLM equipment
iv. SLM equipment price in RM
b. Proper steps to use the equipment (with pictures)
c. Information of data collection venue (with pictures)
d. Results of data being collected
e. Discussion based on the data being collected
f. Conclusion based on the data being collected
g. References (minimum 5 references consisting of 2 handbook or manual, 2 articles & 1 website)

THE LAB REPORT ASSESSMENT RUBRIC IS AS FOLLOWS:

DATE OF SUBMISION: The class lecturer will inform this date.

INSTRUCTIONS CONCERNING SUBMISSION AND ACCEPTANCE OF LAB REPORT:

1. The finalised complete version of the report for submission should be uploaded into TURNITIN.
2. You may get the CLASS ID and PASSWORD from the lecturer.
3. The lab report should have a similarity index of less than 30% for acceptance to marking
assessment. If it is more than 30%, it will be rejected and you will have to redo the lab report.
