Activities/Tasks: What learning experiences will students engage in?
● Mini Lesson
○ Students will meet on their assigned carpet spots on the carpet. Students
will engage in helping me solve tricky words using our list of strategies.
● Literacy Rotations- during literacy rotations, students will go through 5 different
rotations to practice different skills and receive differentiated instruction and
practice that meet their needs.
○ Guided Reading- each group will meet with me for 15-20 minutes. We will
be starting new LLI books today (groups 3-5) and continue our SIPPS lessons
(groups 1 & 2)
○ Lexia
○ Skill Work- students will work on a skill that they should be able to
complete independently based off of what we’ve done in our reading
groups/by their level. For today’s lessons each group will be working on the
following skills:
■ Group 1: Writing upper and lowercase letters
■ Group 2: Beginning Sounds
■ Group 3: Simple Word Chains
■ Group 4: Simple Word Chains
■ Group 5: Story Elements
○ Read to self (Groups 3-5 only)
○ Spelling- Since today is Thursday, students will practice making sentences
out of their spelling words for the week (Groups 3-5 only)

Formative Assessment Criteria for Success: What does success within this lesson’s outcomes look
like?
Students will be assessed when they meet with me during their Guided Reading Lesson.
When they read their books for the first time, they need to use at least 2 different
reading strategies to solve new/tricky words.

I will keep track of this using my “Reading Group Data Collection Form”.

Relevance/Rationale: Why are the outcomes of this lesson important in the real world? Why are these
outcomes essential for future learning?
Throughout this lesson, students will be practicing skills that will help them decode
words throughout the rest of their development as readers. These multiple strategies
will help students solve different kinds of tricky words depending on what about the
word is difficult for them.

For example, if a word doesn’t sound right because of a short/long vowel sound, they
can use “Flippy Dolphin” to help figure out that word. If they just haven’t seen the word
yet and didn’t put the sounds together, they can use “Stretchy Snake” to really sound
out the word and listen for the connections of sounds in the word. If there are digraphs
in new words, students can use “chunky monkey” to put sounds together that they
know.

Overall, this lesson will reinforce that students can use the knowledge they have of
letters and their sounds in order to solve new words. The more they practice these
strategies, the more they will be able to decipher what is tricky about different words
when decoding a word and it will make them more aware of words, letters, and sounds
as a whole. Using these strategies will help students feel more comfortable sounding out
new words and will allow more risk taking in their reading. These are skills students will
continue to do/use for the rest of their lives as readers.

On this page,
you will find the four differentiated activities students worked on during the skill work rotation. Group 1 (top left), Group 2 (top
right), Group 3 & 4 (bottom left)- I found these students need similar practice with their skills, that’s why they are the same.
Group 5 (bottom right).
