Miss Coffey’s Philosophy of

Classroom Instruction

Establishing a successful plan for classroom instruction only comes

after understanding how your students learn. Each classroom encompasses
such a diverse group of learners whose styles, needs, and abilities will vary
greatly. As a teacher, it is my job to determine what works and what does
not through different strategies. It is also important to keep in mind the
importance of a classroom routine when experimenting with different
classroom strategies. Too much change can be a very difficult adjustment for
young students. Allowing students to see the daily schedule on the board,
walking them through the day in the morning, or simply trying to maintain a
similar schedule day-to-day will help maintain order and may even help
students remain calm. While this is dependent on the age group, I believe
starting the day with something resembling a morning meeting can be
beneficial for students to ease into the day and get connected with one
another.
I believe a very important part of student growth comes from their
experiences. As a teacher I will support my students to be investigators,
researchers, problem solvers, journalists, editors, scientists, mathematicians,
reporters, etc. With a priority on hands-on learning, students in my
classroom will experience life through the curriculum or classroom
instruction. I will make sure students’ diversity is considered in the work
assigned and differentiated to fit each student’s needs by providing
manipulatives, additional resources, re-teaching, challenges, etc. Finally, as
a part of my job as a teacher, I know I am not only teaching students
academically, but also shaping/guiding them emotionally and socially. As
part of my classroom instruction, I will include aspects of social emotional
learning to promote student growth.
