Exploring Shapes
and Objects
A helpful tipsheet that can help your child!
ENCOURAGE USING
MATHEMATICAL
LANGUAGE
By making the child use the appropriate language
when describing certain shapes and objects, it helps
build connections and understandings from the
object to the language/word. It also further
consolidates the meaning behind the language.
eg. 'What shape is that bin? How do you know?
CREATIVE OUTLETS
By allowing the children to have a more hands on
approach can help those which learn through
touch and physical activities. It also incorporates
some 21st century skills such as creativity.
Such activities include:
- Playdough
-Origami
-Making paper planes and completing them
-Baking cookies and using shaped cookie cutters
APPLY TO EVERYDAY patterns and then ask the children to describe the
properties.
LIFE
Although the child may have learnt the
information about various shapes and objects, in
order to consolidate their knowledge, we must
apply it to the real world.
This can be done through::
- Going on walks and finding various shaped
objects and describing them
- Sorting out groceries into groups through their
shapes
- Going around the house to see which shapes
they can find
