PAUL (V.O.)
I always worried what people
thought of me. I was too anxious
to get over myself. So I drank
most nights to sleep.
Now, I never want to go back. Not
with Maria being pregnant. I
couldn’t never do that to her, or
my son... or daughter... (Laughs
lightly)
I guess I,...I just want to
better myself, for them. I want
to give them, a father figure
that they can look up too.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
Are you looking for absolution?
PAUL
(Silent at first)
Yes Father...I am.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
Are you sorry for the things you
have done?
PAUL
Yes father.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
Now, say the 10 Our Farthers, and
5 hail Marys.
PAUL
Father?

Paul wakes up, with sweat all over his face and looks over at
MARIA. She is asleep.
Paul hears one final bang from the living room. As he turns
his body towards the living room, he first sees his cross
upside-down on the wall.
He turns his head towards the centre of the living room and
stands astonished at the sight of his rosary beads floating
in the air.
PAUL
My God, I am sorry for my sins
with all my heart. In choosing to
do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned...
MARIA
Where did you go?
PAUL
Just down for a glass of water.
MARIA
Awww okay...

Maria falls back asleep. But Paul lays awake in the bed. He
seems petrified but frozen.
We begin to hear the dialogue into the next scene.
MARIA
(Worried voice)
I thought you were downstairs for
a glass of water?
PAUL
I didn’t want to worry you.
MARIA
So What do we do now?
PAUL
I think we need to see FATHER
JOHN.
Maria looks a Paul with worried eyes. She looks down and then
walks towards the hallway.
MARIA
I’ll grab our coats.
FT JOHN
This banging, and, coldness in
your home
PAUL
And the rosary beads
FT JOHN
And the rosary beads. Are you
sure you weren’t on any sort of
drugs or medicines that caused
you to see and feel
these...supernatural events?
PAUL
No father. I swore that life
away.
Father John nods his head downwards while resting his hand on
a bible.

PAUL
I have sworn that part of me
away. With Maria pregnant and
with my....our, first child, I
never want my old life.
PAUL
The drugs I sold, the drinking
every night, the...
PAUL
I know what I want. I don’t want
my old life. So no, I wasn’t on
any drugs.
PAUL
I want this.
FT JOHN
Here is what we’ll need to do.
FT JOHN
Tonight, I will come by after
dinner. We will say a few hymns
and we will ask these, visitors
to leave. I believe that they are
just misguided and just need a
bit of direction.
MARIA
And if, these visitors are bigger
than we think?
FT JOHN
I’m sure they are just mis...
MARIA
Father, I am just asking. What
if?

MARIA
What will we do, if these aren’t
just visitors?
FT JOHN
Then we pray.
Father john stops just before the living room. The camera is
slowly panning towards him from the top of the stairs. Father
John feels a presence in the house.
MARIA
Father, do you take milk in your
tea?
MARIA
Father john?
FT JOHN
Just milk Maria....

PAUL
Father. Will do this another
night?
FT JOHN
I’m sorry Paul, but this presence
in your home, is much worse than
I thought.
Maria and Paul are standing together now. Father John looks
at them both.
FT JOHN
We have to start the process.
MARIA
Okay, what do you need us to do?
FT JOHN
Maria, you said that the house
has felt cold? Where did you feel
the it the most?
MARIA
In the baby’s room.
FT JOHN
Anything else?
PAUL
Our crosses. When I came down
last night they were turned...
And we can’t turn them back.
Something else is holding them.

MARIA
We’re never going to be able to
stay here, are we father?
FT JOHN
Now now my child. We will drive
these spirits out. Tonight you
will sleep soundly. You will have
peace of mind and you will feel
safe in Gods hands.
There is no need to have fear
Maria.
They all slowly approach the baby’s room, all of them still
saying the prayer. Once they reach the baby’s closed door.
Father John blesses the door and tries to open it. The door
is locked.

MARIA
This room has never been locked.
PAUL
I think the key is downstairs.
MARIA
I’ll check our bedroom if you
check down stairs.
The camera pans down to show Father Johns bible is torn up.
Paul and Maria are both behind Father John following him as
heads for the front door.
PAUL
Father! Are you okay? What
happened?
MARIA
Father, please tells us what
happened.
FT JOHN
You should both leave this place.
Father John goes to walk out the front door. The front door

is wide open but Father John stops at Maria and Pauls call.
9.
PAUL
But Father.
FT JOHN
You need a stronger priest!
Father John looks down at the ground, then into space with
fear in his eyes. He walks out of frame.
Maria falls to the floor, bawling her eyes out with fear.
Paul tries to comfort her but she gets up and heads into the
living room. Paul at first followers her, but stops at the
staircase. He looks around himself and sits on the 3rd step.
staring out the front door.
Maria lets out a massive cry and the camera cuts to the next
morning. The front door is shut. We cut to a close up of the
door and Maria is leaving the house with a suitcase behind
her. Paul is on the 3rd step of the stairs, similar to the
night before. Before Maria leaves she walks back over to Paul
and looks at him. He raises his head to her.
FLASHBACK START
Maria and Paul are having a
massive argument. Maria explains
that all of this is too much
stress for her, and the baby.
Maria then comes out of the living room with her suitcase and
out the front door, only to return back to Paul to kiss him
and leave the house.

PAUL
Excuse me, but have you seen
father John?
WOMAN
Hello there. Father John isn’t
feeling the best.
PAUL
What did he say? Did he say when
he’ll be coming back?
WOMAN
I can’t say what’s wrong with
him, but I can say that he might
not be back for some time.
Paul has a look of concern on his face, waiting for the woman
to explain further.
WOMAN
Father John has taken himself
onto sabbatical leave until
further notice. So, I wouldn’t be
waiting around for him.
WOMAN
You should talk to FATHER
MCLAUGHLIN. I’m sure he’ll get
you sort what you’re after.
PAUL
Do you know where he is?
WOMAN
He is in the graveyard, tending
to some of the graves.
PAUL
Thank you so much.
PAUL
Hello Father, are you busy? (Paul
says with haste)

FT MCLAUGHLIN
Ah yes Paul, hello.
PAUL
How do you know my name?
FT MCLAUGHLIN
Father John told me what happened
at your home.
PAUL
(Sadly)
Yeah.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
I may be able get the help you
need.
PAUL
Can you not help us?
FT MCLAUGHLIN
No no. Me and Father John are not
strong enough.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
But I can contact a higher power
if you’d like?
PAUL
A higher power?
FT MCLAUGHLIN
Yes yes. Others who are much
stronger than Father John or
myself.
PAUL
At this point, I’m willing to do
what ever it takes.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
That’s what I like to hear.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
What happened to Father John was
too much for him. He...feels
overwhelmed by the presence in
your home. I don’t think he will
return to the church.
PAUL
I’m sorry Father,

FT MCLAUGHLIN
What? Noooo. This isn’t your
fault. Father John should have
known not to enter somewhere were
his faith can’t protect him.
PAUL
But he wouldn’t be....
FT MCLAUGHLIN
Hush my child.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
We will get this sorted Paul.
FT MCLAUGHLIN
We, will see what we can do.

Paul driving down the main road
Paul on the phone at his home trying to get in touch with
Maria
Paul walking the streets alone.
PAUL
So what can I do?
FT MCLAUGHLIN
Go home. Try and contact Maria.
And most importantly, pray. Pray
that all of this comes to an end.
Pray that God gives you the
strength to fight onwards. Pray,
for you and Maria. Pray...For
yourself Paul. Because no one
else can.

Paul stands beside his car, with the church behind him. The
church is lit with spotlights, so it stands out from the
darkness.
Paul hangs his phone up. We see a large body of water, with
twinkling lights bouncing off the current in the distance.
A boy tugs at Pauls jacket.
BOY
Excuse me. You dropped these.
PAUL
A boy your age shouldn’t be out
he...
The boy grabs Pauls hand places something in them. Paul opens
his hand to see a set of rosary beads. Paul looks at them and
smiles. Paul then looks back up to see that the boy is gone.

Paul looks around himself, paranoid where the boy went off
too.

Paul grips the the rosary beads with the Chapel in the
background. Paul looks at the Chapel and marches with
determination in his eyes. He is ready to do whatever it
takes, to make it through this.
