Competency 3: Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice

Social workers understand that every person regardless of position in society has fundamental human rights such as freedom, safety,
privacy, an adequate standard of living, health care, and education. Social workers understand the global interconnections of
oppression and human rights violations, and are knowledgeable about theories of human need and social justice and strategies to
promote social and economic justice and human rights. Social workers understand strategies designed to eliminate oppressive
structural barriers to ensure that social goods, rights, and responsibilities are distributed equitably and that civil, political,
environmental, economic, social, and cultural human rights are protected.
Social workers: (Component Behaviors (CB))
a. apply their understanding of social, economic, and environmental justice to advocate for human rights at the individual and
system levels; and
b. engage in practices that advance social, economic, and environmental justice.

does this element demonstrate
competence?
b. engage in practices that advance FIT Community Resource Guide
Updated and added resources to social, economic, and environmental (See attached below)
the RCSD FIT Community Resource justice. (Counsel on Social Work
Education, 2015)
Guide

This artifact reflects the ability to

demonstrate how to engage in
practices that advance social
economic and environmental justice
by showing that I am able to update
and add more beneficial resources for
my clients to use. This in turn
advances their social status and aides
them in self-advocating for social
justice. In the NASW Code of Ethics it
states that “Social workers should act
to expand choice and opportunity for
all people…” (National Association of
Social Workers Code of Ethics, 2019)
Based on this I would say that this
artifact justly exemplifies the
competency of engaging in practices
that advance social, economic, and
environmental justice.

Attending Project Homeless a. apply their understanding of social, Homeless Connect Flier
Connect economic, and environmental justice
(Homeless Connect Flier) to advocate for human rights at the
individual and system levels (Counsel
on Social Work Education, 2015)

This artifact reflects the ability to

demonstrate how to apply
understanding of social justice to
advocate for human rights because in
attending this event, I was able to
help direct individuals to different
services and provide them with
resources. In doing this I was also
able to collaborate and network with
other organizations to try and gain
information and resources to take
back to our clients. In the NASW
Code of Ethics it states that, "Social
workers should act to expand choice
and opportunity for all people, with
special regard for vulnerable,
disadvantaged, oppressed, and
exploited people and groups."
(National Association of Social
Workers Code of Ethics, 2019) Based
on this information this artifact is a
great example of applying and
understanding social justice to
advocate for human rights.
