DEFINITIONS OF REALITY

What is a social reality?

 Sociologists understand that reality is socially constructed, meaning that people shape
their experiences through social interaction.
 Social reality’, or ‘the social realm’, refer to all those phenomena whose existence
depends necessarily on human beings and their interactions.
 Sociologists understand that reality is socially constructed, meaning that people shape their
experiences through social interaction. Social realities can dictate how we view the world
around us and in turn influence our choices and decisions.
LET US ELABORATE…

 Communities- an identifiable, restricted, relatively

enduring, coherent organized grouping of people who
share some set of concerns.
 Normativity-it arises because when the noted
indicative aspect of any collective practice is also
interpreted as stipulative, as indicating how an
individual ought to proceed.
LET US ELABORATE…

 Collective Practice- is recognized, over an interval in

time and within some specific community as the accepted
way of proceeding with regard to achieving a particular
outcome. Involves the participation of all members of the
community.
 Social Rules- a representations of norms, interpreted as
generalized procedures for action. An expression or
formulation of a normative aspect of a collective practice.
LET US ELABORATE…

 Division of practice, process, and events- it is accepted

that certain practices can be followed by some, but not by
others. To follow particular practices, it is necessary to
belong to specific subgroups within a community.
 Collective Process- any internally related combination of
practices. Examples are the continuous interactions on a
university campus or in a marketplace.
 Power- expresses positioned rights and obligations to
participate in specific others affecting collective practices that
are granted to accepted occupants of relevant positions.
LET US ELABORATE…

 Positions- different groupings, each with its own associated

accepted sets of ways of proceeding.
 Social Relations- express the manner of connection of
social positions. Connecting two or more positions or
occupants of positions.
ACTIVITY

 List down all the Primary Needs and Secondary Needs using the matrix; and
 Next is to list down the items that you consider as wants.
NEEDS WANTS
Primary Secondary
WHAT IS A NEED?

 Requirements for the satisfaction of the human being and for his
optimal adjustment to the environment. Basic needs are food,
shelter, clothing etc. Needs have varying import at different ages
under different circumstances.
 Social Problem starts with the existence of a need. Therefore, for us
to understand more the social problem, it is imperative that we first
understand what need is.

WANTS - A condition or situation in which something

necessary or desirable is required or wanted so that the
person may function satisfactorily.
WHAT IS SOCIAL PROBLEM?

 It is a problem of human relationship which seriously threatens

society or impedes the important aspirations of people.
 It could begin with a private individual problem, after some time it
may affect others and becomes problem of a group or
neighborhood.
 A whole community can observed and experience the
occurrence of such problem then it becomes a social problem.
 One distinction social problem have is that it is attached to social,
political, and economic aspiration of a nation.
HUMAN NEEDS BY ABRAHAM MASLOW

 His unique contribution is drawing upon his investigation of healthy and

creative persons to arrive as certain formulations regarding personality.
 Propounded a theory of human motivation that differentiates between
basic needs & meta needs.
 His theory of human motivation suggests a hierarchical principle - takes
both biological and social foundation of human motives into
consideration.
HUMAN NEEDS BY ABRAHAM MASLOW
FROM HUMAN NEEDS TO HUMAN RIGHTS

Human Rights is the framework of UDHR (Universal Declaration on Human Rights)

4 Principles of Human Rights
1. Universal
2. Indivisibility
3. Inalienability
4. Interrelated
EMERGENCE OF RIGHTS-BASED
PERSPECTIVE AND APPROACH IN SOCIETY

 Founded on the conviction that all human beings are holders of rights.
 A right requires a government to respect, promote, protect and fulfill it. “The
Legal and Normative character of rights and the associated governmental
obligations are based on international human rights treaties and other
standards, as well as on national constitutional human rights provision.”
WHAT DOES A RIGHTS’ APPROACH TO
SOCIAL WELFARE MEAN?

 Understanding the difference between a right and a need.

 A right is something to which I am entitled solely by virtue of being
a person.. That which enables me to live with dignity.
 A right can be enforced before the government and entails an
obligation on the part of the government to honor it.
