Case Study

Mr. Phillips is a retired public servant who lives in Harbour View on the sea front. The patio on
the front of his balcony, which is constructed from metal is corroded and need to be protected
from the sea air which is the main contributing factor of the corrosion. The dimension of the
patio is 28 feet wide, 30 feet long and 12 feet high. The welding department at the Jamaica
Defence Force Technical Training Institute (JDF TTI) is tasked to prepare the surface of the
metal work and apply protective coating to eliminate the corrosion problem.

1. Explain the steps that should be used to prepare the metal surface of the patio before
applying the coating
