Scenario

Mr. Brown is the supervisor at a Machine and Welding Shop. A request was made for some
materials to be delivered to the shop. When the materials arrived, some appeared gray and
sandy, showed lines of casting and the others ½ “in thickness, appeared smooth finished with
bluish sheen.

Three pieces were standard sheet metal required to make table tops and two pieces to make
bench vices. Later that day two sheets of mild steel plate standard measurement 1/8” thickness
were also delivered at the shop.

1. State the two (02) types of materials which were first delivered? [ 2 marks]

2. What is the most appropriate thermal cutting equipment that can be used to cut the pieces
of ½” plate? (ii) Give reasons for your answer? [ 1 + 2 marks]

3. How many table tops 30” x 48” in size could we get from the material? [2 marks]

4. (i) Which of the materials would you use a guillotine to cut? (ii) Give reasons for your
answer. [ 1 + 1 = 2 marks]
5. Differentiate between the two types of materials delivered. (Be sure to state the names of
your materials in your explanation) [ 2 marks]

Section B

5. Explain the following terms:

a. Annealing b. Hardening c. Tempering

[ 2 marks + 2 marks+ 2 marks = 6 Marks ]

6. (i) What are the three (03) main types of engineering materials? (ii) Explain any two.

[3 Marks + 4 Marks = 7 Marks]

7. Discuss two external factors that can affect metal? [ 2 Marks + 2 Marks = 4 Marks]

8. Explain the appropriate way to check for gas leaks on the oxyacetylene cutting equipment.

[2 Marks]

9. Differentiate the three (03) main oxyacetylene flames. [ 2 marks + 2 marks + 2 marks = 6
marks]

10. Discuss the differences between ferrous metals and non ferrous metals. [ 4 Marks]

Practical Task
Trainees are required to select and fit the appropriate tools, equipment and PPE required to carry
out the following tasks:

a. Use the oxyacetylene torch to cut mild steel plate 4”x2”x1/4” thickness.

b. Drill hole 10mm in diameter in the center of the plate.

NB Materials should be cut to specification and centre should be precise

PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT FORM

Welding and Fabrication – Level 2
Candidate’s Number: _________________________________________________
Institution Name: _____________________________________________________________
Unit Title and Code: Perform manual heating and thermal cutting, Classify engineering
materials (basic), Carry out mechanical cutting operations
TASK: Trainees are required to select and fit the appropriate tools, equipment and PPE required to
carry out the following tasks:

a. Use the oxyacetylene torch to cut mild steel plate 4”x2”x1/4” thickness.

b. Drill hole 10mm in diameter in the center of the plate.

NB Materials should be cut to specification and centre should be precise

Criteria 1 2 3 4
Tools, equipment and material are appropriately selected
All safety procedures are observed
Material heated and cut to specification shape/size/length to accepted
workplace standards
Machine is operated to cut/hole material to specifications using standard
operating procedures
Work area cleaned up

TOTAL: ____________________________

RATING: __________________________

Rating Scale Score (%)

5. Can perform the task with initiative and adaptability to problem situations. 80 - 100
4. Can perform the task satisfactorily without assistance and/or supervision. 70 - 79
3. Can perform the task but requires periodic assistance and/or supervision. 60 - 69
2. Can perform limited parts of the tasks satisfactorily requires considerable assistance. 50 - 59
1. Has not demonstrated sufficient evidence on which judgment can be made

Notables for scoring practical assessment

1. To calculate the candidate’s final rating the following formula should be applied:

Total performance Criteria scored

Number of criteria being assessed

For example:

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 1 2 3 4 5
Tools, equipment and material are appropriately selected 
Safety barricades, signs, and lights are in place for excavation work 
Material are used economically with minimum waste 
Excavated base is level 
4 18 12 15

Total criteria = 4 + 18 + 12 +15 = 49

Final rating = 49 ÷ 12 = 4.08

2. Where a performance criteria was not demonstrated by or was not required of the candidate, the
assessor may award a not Applicable (N/A) for the criterion in question.

In such an instance, the total criteria would be reduced by the number of N/A scores awarded.

For example, if criterion # 1 from the simple is excluded, then the final rating would be 45 ÷ 11 =
4.09

3. The final rating should be calculated and recorded on the practical assessment form for
each candidate.
