An altar call is a practice in some evangelical churches in which those who wish

to make a new spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ are invited to come

forward publicly. It is so named because the supplicants (kérvényező, esdeklő)
gather at the altar located at the front of the church building. In the Old
Testament, an altar was where sacrifices were made. So, the name "altar call"
refers to a believer "offering" themselves on an altar to God, as in Romans
12:1:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your
bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable
service.[1]

Most altar calls occur at the end of an evangelical address[citation needed] invitation

may be referred to as an "altar call" even if there is no actual altar present.

TONIGHT, YOU CAN HAVE ALL YOUR SINS FORGIVEN TONIGHT BECAUSE
CHRIST DIED ON THE CROSS AND SHED HIS BLOOD FOR YOU. AND IT’S
WONDERFUL TO GOME TONIGHT AND KNOW THAT EVERY SIN IS FORGIVEN.

AFTER YOU’VE ALL COME I’M GONNA SAY A WORD TO ALL OF YOU AND
HAVE A PRAYER WITH ALL OF YOU AND GIVE YOU SOME LITERATURE THAT’LL
HELP YOU. IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS, RELATIVES THAT ALL WAIT ON YOU, IF YOU
COME WITH A ROOMMATE FROM SCHOOL AND IF YOU DON’T WANNA
LEAVE YOUR FRIEND BRING YOUR FRIEND WITH YOU. GOD HAS SPOKEN TO
YOU, THER’S A VOICE THAT SAYS YOU NEED CHRIST YOU GET UP AND COME
WE’RE GOING TO WAIT ON YOU. QUICKLY, FROM EVERYWHERE, YOU COME.
(12:36) SO WRITE AND TELL US THAT YOU’VE MADE A COMMITMENT
(ELKÖTELEZTED MAGAD) TO CHRIST TONIGHT. DON’T PUT IT OFF
(HALOGASD) BECAUSE THE SCRIPTURE SAYS THAT NOW IS THE EXCEPTED
TIME, TODAY IS THE TIME FOR SALVATION (ÜDVÖZÖLÉS). THERE MAY NOT BE
A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE QUITE LIKE TONIGHT. YOU COME AND MAKE THAT
COMMITMENT. WE’RE GOING TO BE PRAYING FOR YOU AND BE SURE TO GO
TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU.
