Abstract ii

The following work has the development of the three exercises previously proposed by
the teacher of the area, where problems of Mohr’s circle explain the material’s behavior with
different loads over there.

First Exercise

Exercise 9.14

Question

In the figure, the state of effort at a point of a member is displayed above the

item. Determine (a) the main stresses and (b) the maximum shear stress in the plane, as

well as the average normal effort at the point. Specify the orientation of the element in

each case. Show the results for each item.

Figure 1 scheme for the loads.

Solution

The values we have is:

𝜎𝑥 = −30𝑘𝑠𝑖

𝜎𝑦 = 0 𝐾𝑠𝑖

𝜏𝑥𝑦 = −12𝐾𝑠𝑖

The values that we need to find is:

𝑴𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔:

2

𝜎𝑥 + 𝜎𝑦 −30𝐾𝑠𝑖 + 0𝐾𝑠𝑖
𝜎𝑎𝑣𝑔 = = = −15𝐾𝑠𝑖
2 2

𝑴á𝒙𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔:

𝜎𝑥 − 𝜎𝑦 2 2 = √(
−30 − 0 2
𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 = √( ) + 𝜏𝑥𝑦 ) + (−12)2 = 19.209𝐾𝑠𝑖
2 2

𝑴𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔:

𝜎1 = 𝜎𝑎𝑣𝑔 + 𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 = −15𝐾𝑠𝑖 + 19.209𝑘𝑠𝑖 = 4.2094𝐾𝑠𝑖

𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔:

𝜎1 = 𝜎𝑎𝑣𝑔 − 𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 = −15𝐾𝑠𝑖 − 19.209𝑘𝑠𝑖 = −34.209𝐾𝑠𝑖

𝑹𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒂𝒙\𝒎𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒍 𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆:

2𝜏𝑥𝑦
tan−1 (𝜎 − 𝜎 ) tan−1 ( 2 ∗ (−12𝑘𝑠𝑖) )
𝑥 𝑦 −30𝑘𝑠𝑖 − 0𝑘𝑠𝑖
𝜃𝑝1 = = = 19.33°
2 2

𝜃𝑝2 = 90° + 𝜃𝑝2 = 90° + 19.33° = 109.33°

𝑅𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 max/𝑚𝑖𝑛 𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑒

−(𝜎𝑥 − 𝜎𝑦 −1 −(−30𝑘𝑠𝑖 − 0𝑘𝑠𝑖)

tan−1 ( 2𝜏𝑥𝑦 ) tan ( 2 ∗ (−12𝑘𝑠𝑖) )
𝜃𝑠1 = = = −25.67°
2 2

𝜃𝑠2 = 90° + 𝜃𝑠1 = 90° + (−25.65°) = 64.33

Second Exercise

Exercise 9.67

Question

Determine the principal stresses, the maximum shear stress in the plane, and the

average normal stress.

Specify the orientation of the element in each case.

Figure 3 Scheme centroid for the wire.

Solution

The values we have is:

𝜎𝑥 = 350𝑀𝑃𝑎

𝜎𝑦 = 0 − 200𝑀𝑃𝑎

𝜏𝑥𝑦 = 500 𝑀𝑃𝑎

5

The values that we need to find is:

𝑴𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔:

𝜎𝑥 + 𝜎𝑦 350𝑀𝑃𝑎 − 200𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝜎𝑎𝑣𝑔 = = = 75𝑀𝑃𝑎
2 2

𝑴á𝒙𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔:

𝜎𝑥 − 𝜎𝑦 2 2 = √(
350𝑀𝑃𝑎 + 200𝑀𝑃𝑎 2
𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 = √( ) + 𝜏𝑥𝑦 ) + (500)2
2 2

= 570.636𝑀𝑃𝑎

𝑴𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔:

𝜎1 = 𝜎𝑎𝑣𝑔 + 𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 75𝑀𝑃𝑎 + 570.636𝑀𝑃𝑎 = 645.636𝑀𝑃𝑎

𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔:

𝜎2 = 𝜎𝑎𝑣𝑔 − 𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 75𝑀𝑃𝑎 − 570.636𝑀𝑃𝑎 = −495.64𝑀𝑃𝑎

𝑹𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒂𝒙\𝒎𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒍 𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆:

2𝜏𝑥𝑦
tan−1 (𝜎 − 𝜎 ) tan−1 ( 2 ∗ (500𝑀𝑃𝑎) )
𝑥 𝑦 350𝑀𝑃𝑎 + 200𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝜃𝑝1 = = = 30.595°
2 2

𝜃𝑝2 = 90° + 𝜃𝑝2 = 90° + 30.595° = 120.595°

6

𝑅𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 max/𝑚𝑖𝑛 𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑒

−(𝜎𝑥 − 𝜎𝑦
tan−1 ( 2𝜏 ) tan−1 (−(350𝑀𝑃𝑎 + 200𝑀𝑃𝑎))
𝑥𝑦 2 ∗ (500𝑀𝑃𝑎)
𝜃𝑠1 = = = −14.405°
2 2

𝜃𝑠2 = 90° + 𝜃𝑠1 = 90° + (−14.405°) = 75.595°
