6 Engine

V-ACT
Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology (V-ACT) is a Volvo developed engine
technology tailored for use in demanding off-road applications. Fuel injection is
electronically controlled based on temperature, pressure, load and engine speed
in order to achieve optimal combustion.
A high pressure fuel injection with great precision is obtained by the use of the
high pressure pump, a common rail and electronically controlled fuel injectors.
The engine ECM controls the combustion process with incredible precision.
Customer benefit
• Low fuel consumption. High torque at low engine speeds.
• Tried and tested technology with long operating life.
Available for L110H, L120H
• Low emission levels that fulfill exhaust cleaning requirements for Tier 4 final and
Stage IV.
• Smooth and fast engine response for optimum operability and maximum
operator satisfaction.

Tier 4 final /stage IV Engine

6-cylinder, 8 litres inline turbocharged diesel engine with an advanced common rail
fuel injection system. Fuel is distributed under high pressure from a high-pressure
accumulator. One camshaft- driven high pressure pump delivers the fuel to the
rail and then to the electronically operated fuel injectors via high pressure pipes.
It also features an exhaust after treatment system which makes this engine comply
to Tier 4 final / Stage IV emission legislation. This engine meets all emission
requirements by the help of the exhaust after treatment system (EATS) which
contains the diesel oxy-catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) for
regeneration, urea injector, mixing chamber,SCR and slipcat for reduction of NOx.
The reduction of NOx is assisted by the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation
(EGR) as well.
Available for L110H, L120H
Customer benefit
• Low emission levels fulfill exhaust cleaning requirements for Tier 4 final / Stage
IV. Moreover, this engine provides high torque at low engine speeds which
makes it fuel efficient.

Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)

The engine utilizes a cooled exhaust gas re-circulation system to reduce NOx.
The EGR control valve directs a proportion of the exhaust gas through the cooler.
The EGR cooler, made of stainless steel and mounted on the engine block,
uses the engine coolant to cool down the recirculated exhaust gas to a required
temperature. The gas then flows into the mixing chamber to meet the incoming
fresh air before being fed into the engine intake.
This process reduces the amount of NOx created in the combustion chamber,
moreover it creates a higher temperature exhaust gas which is necessary to start
the oxidation in the DOC and SCRs later on.
Customer benefit
Available for L110H, L120H • Low emission levels fulfill exhaust cleaning requirements for Tier 4 final/Stage IV.
Engine 7

Diesel Particulate filter (DPF)

The Diesel Particulate Filter ( DPF) is part of the EATS which traps and
temporarily stores soot and crystals from the exhaust gas. The soot and crystals
are then burnt off in the regeneration process.
The diesel oxidation catalyst or "oxicat" (DOC) found in the DPF oxidizes HC,
CO and NO (particulate matters) into H2O, CO2 and NO2. The DPF makes the
ordinary muffler redundant.
Customer benefit
• Low emission levels fulfill exhaust cleaning requirements for Tier 4 final/ Stage IV.

Available for L110H, L120H

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) / AdBlue®

DEF is a liquid compound of Urea and de-ionized water. Urea is a nitrogen
compound that changes into Ammonia (NH3) when exposed to heat. This
solution is used in order to convert Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) into Nitrogen (N2)
and water vapour (H2O).
Once the exhaust gas passes the DPF, it goes through a mixing chamber where
DEF is injected thru a dozing unit. The DEF is stored in a tank of 31 litre/ 8,2g
capacity and needs to be refilled every time diesel fuel is refilled. The DEF filler
pipe is found right next to the diesel fuel filler pipe and it has a blue cap in order
to avoid mistakes. DEF hoses are electrically heated in order to prevent freezing.
Customer benefit
Available for L110H, L120H • Reduction of NOx from exhaust and therefore engine meets tier 4f/ stage IV
emission legislation.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

After the mixing chamber, the mixture goes into the SCR where the Ammonia
(NH3) from the DEF reacts with the Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gas
resulting in Nitrogen (N2) and water vapour (H2O). Any excess Ammonia from
the reaction is trapped and further reduced to Nitrogen and water in the Ammonia
slip catalyst.

Available for L110H, L120H

Regeneration
Every 500 hours, the EGR is turned off, throttle opening reduced and fuel is let
in to the exhaust by means of late injection in to the combustion chamber which
all together increases the exhaust temperature to start up the active regeneration
process in the DPF. This process is included in the 500 hour service interval.
Customer benefit
• Reduced fuel consumption due to longer interval between regenerations.

Available for L110H, L120H

Reversible cooling fan

The cooling fan is driven by hydraulic oil from pump 3, which also supplies hydraulic
oil to the brake pressure charging. It has a reversible functionality which allows self
cleaning of the cooling units by blowing air in opposite direction to the normal flow.
The cooling fan automatically adjusts its speed in response to the cooling demands.
If not, the fan rotates at a low basic speed. The fan draws air from the rear and
blows it through the sides unless reverse flow is activated.
Customer benefit
• Cooling units are self-cleaning.
• Customers also benefit from reduced fuel consumption and lower sound levels
since the cooling fan rarely operates at max speed.
Available for L110H, L120H

up quicker.

Turbocharger with mechanical wastegate

The mechanical waste-gate on the turbocharger deflects the exhaust gas from
hitting the turbine end of the turbocharger by receiving physical feedback about
the engine boost pressure. This prevents the engine from overboosting and
helps maintain the exact amount of boost pressure required for the combustion
process.
Customer benefit
• Improves the lifetime of the turbocharger and the combustion quality of the
engine.

Available for L110H, L120H
