In this lesson we have been looking at the heating curve for a water. Use the heating curve below
and the constants given to answer the following questions. Change your answer to blue.
* Specific heat of ice is 2.1 J/goC
* Specific heat of water is 4.186 J/goC
* Specific heat of water vapor 1.9 J/goC
* Heat of fusion for water is 334 J/g
* Heat of vaporization for water 260 J/g

1. Identify which formula you should use for a change in heat associated with each labeled
section of the curve above.
I. Q = mcΔT
II. Q = mΔHv
III. Q = mΔHf
For section A on the graph: 1
For section B on the graph: 3
For section C on the graph: 1
For section D on the graph: 2
For section E on the graph: 1

2. Section B on the graph indicates a change in state from solid to liquid, whereas section D
on the graph indicates a change in state from liquid to gas.
For the question below, use the information at the start of this paper and show your work!
3. How much energy is required to heat 35g of water from 25oC to 100oC? Assume no phase
change.
Q = (35)(4.186)(100-25) = 10988.25 J

4. How much energy is required to melt a 250 gram ice cube?

Q = (250)(334) = 83500 J

5. A beaker of 100g of water is heated using 5,000 J. What is the change in temperature?
5000 = (100)(4.186)(T) = 11.945 C

6. A closed container of water vapor is heated using 7,500 J of energy from 105oC to 140oC.
What is the mass of the vapor in the container?
7500 = m(260) = 28.846 g

7. A cup of 132 g of water is heated from 30 oC until all of the water changed to water
vapor. What amount of energy is required?
Q = (132)(4.186)(100-30)= 38678.64 J

8. What amount of energy is required to cool 75g of water from 95 oC until all of the water
is frozen?
Q = (75)(4.186)(95) = 29825.25 J

9. What amount of energy is required to heat 48 grams of water from 40 oC to 120 oC?

Q = (48)(4.186)(120-40) = 16074.24 J
Q = (48)(260) = 12480 J
Q = 12480 + 16074.24 = 28554.24

10. How much energy is needed to cool a cup of water from 23 oC to -23 oC?
Q = (132)(4.186)(-23-23) = -25416.392 J

Q = (132)(334) = 44088 J
Q = 44088 - 25416.392 = 18671.608 J
