1. The molar heat of combustion of a compound is 2567 kJ/mol. If 0.765 moles of this
compound was burned in a bomb calorimeter containing 13.70 L of water, what would the
increase in temperature be? (10pts)
 (0.765mol)(2567kJ/mol) = 1963.755KJ
 T = (1963.755KJ)/( 13.70x103) (4.184 J/gC) = 599 733.644 joules

2. A 550g sample of mercury (specific heat = 0.14J/gC, the initial temperature of 278K) is
placed into 0.45kg of water ( initial temperature 76C) to find the final temperature of the
system? (10pts)

Let T be the final temperature.

Heat gained by mercury = mass of mercury x specific heat of mercury x temperature

change

= 550g x 0.14 x (T – 4.85C)

Heat lost by water = mass of water x specific heat of water x temperature change

= 450 x 4.184 x (76 - T)

Heat gained = heat lost

550g x 0.14 x (T – 4.85C)= 450 x 4.184 x (76C - T)

77T -373.45 = 143092.8 – 1882.8T

1969.8T = 143466.25

Final temperature T = 72.83oC

3. A process was carried out at a pressure of 3atm. The heat released was 150kJ and the
volume increased 15L. what is the value of ∆ U ?(5pts)

U= Q + W
U= -150KJ + 3(15-0)
U = -150KJ + 45
U = -105KJ
