Course Title & Grade Level: Allergens 10/11th Grade
Standards: SC.HSP.6.5.D Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence that feedback mechanisms in
the nervous system help maintain homeostasis.
SC.HSP.6.5.E Construct and present arguments using evidence to support claims about the causes of
dysfunction in the nervous system.
Objectives: Students can describe the immune system’s response to allergens and discuss different allergies of
humans.

Content— Students will understand the role of the immune system when fighting allergens to help maintain
homeostasis.

Language—— In groups or individually, students will discuss allergens in humans and how they affect the
immune system by reading articles and answering questions on a worksheet.

Student-friendly— Today I am learning about allergens so that I can better understand what goes on when
someone encounters an allergen. I’ll know I’ve got it when I can complete a worksheet that corresponds to
different articles about common allergens.
Assessment: Students expected to be on task and actively listening during lecture. Once they get to their
articles, they should be actively reading and jotting down notes to answer questions about the articles. I will be
conducting formative assessments by walking around and assisting as needed. The readings are straightforward
and correspond to the articles.
Proactive Management: Students expected to be on task and working. They can choose to work in groups of
2-3 or individually. The AP class is excellent with participation, so questions are not an issue and everyone is
ready to talk.
Instructional Strategies: Provocative Picture, individual work, note taking, group work, collaborative work
Note Taking Strategy: Bolded words in PowerPoint indicate important vocabulary. Can access PowerPoint at
any time via Classroom
Questions: Provocative Picture: What is striking about this photo? What causes the red bumps? Any stories
about allergies?
PowerPoint: Recall what the job of the immune system is? Think of how the different allergen gets into your
body
Anticipatory Set: Provocative Picture of allergen followed by discussion
The Lesson:
- Provocative picture of allergic reaction and discussion (approximately 5 mins)
- What is striking about this photo?
- What causes the red bumps?
- Any stories about allergies?
- Lecture of allergens via small PowerPoint (approx. 15 mins)
- 1st Slide
- Recall what the job of the immune system is?
- Purpose of immune system response is to get rid of allergen
- 2nd Slide
- Think of how the different allergen gets into your body
- Talk about your allergies and symptoms
- Tell story about Kelsea’s bee allergy
- 3rd Slide
- Give example of your asthma medication
- Gradual Release of Responsibility (10 min)
- Go over the peanut vaccine article with them
- Explain directions for reading articles and worksheet
- Individual work (20 mins)
- Each table has an allergy article, students should read articles to answer questions on worksheet
Closure:
Procedural— Students will hand in their article worksheet or work on it for homework and turn it in next class

Content Summary— Students can describe immune system response to allergens and discuss allergies present
in humans.

Lesson Plan Reflection (required):

1) Highlight Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) components within your lesson.
Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) elaborating on the intentionally planned CRT components of your lesson. How did you
demonstrate high expectations, make learning relevant, and motivate students?

Unfortunately, there isn’t much CRT in my lesson, however, I have made room for questions to involve
students and keep the content interesting in order to motivate them more.

2) Italicize Universal Design for Learning (UDL) components within your lesson.
Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) elaborating on the intentionally planned UDL components (representation, action &
expression, engagement) of your lesson. How did you differentiate to meet the needs of ALL learners?

The students all have access to the PowerPoint and articles so if for any reason they are unable to
complete the worksheet in class, they can always do it at home. The use of provocative picture is
intended to engage the students.
