Fire Safety Lesson Plan

Objectives
· The students will identify when the fire is safe and when it is not

Anticipatory Set
Hello boys and girls! Let’s seat in the carpet to start a very interesting lesson. Today we
will learn about fire and how we should be responsible when we are around it. I am pretty sure
you have an idea of when fire is friendly and when it is not.
To start we will read a book related to this topic. What is the title of the book? (One
student answers) What about the author? (another student answers) Finally, can someone tell me
who did the illustrations? (one more student answer) The book is “I am fire” written by Jean
Marzollo and illustrated by Judith Moffat.

Now that we have read the book, we learned a lot about fire right? Fire is both good and
bad. It heats our soup and bakes our bread, but it can also spread into a forest fire. Know that we
learned about fire safety and all the beauty, power, and danger of fire; let’s try to fill out this
chart (Shows fire chart divided in two, where one side is Friend and the other is Foe)

Procedures
Okay! Now that we read “I am Fire” and we know that fire can be friendly and dangerous
sometimes, let’s recall what we learned in this chart. (I am going to ask students to tell me when
fire can be considered as friendly, and I will write it down in the chart) Good job! Now let’s
think about when fire is NOT friendly (I am going to ask students to tell me when fire can be
considered as friendly, and I will write it down in the chart).
FRIEND FOE

Closure
You did a very good job recalling when fire is friendly and when it is not. Do you think
you learned something important today? Fire safety is truly important, that’s why we may keep
our fire chart in our board (paste chart on the board)

Assessment
I will observe students being attentive while reading the book since it is fundamental for
them to understand fire safety. While doing the chart, I will make sure that students participate
and pay attention to what their classmates want to say.

Reflection

I think this lesson went well and I could tell I was a little more comfortable than the first one. At
the beginning, I am not going to lie, I was nervous, however, as I taught the lesson and saw that the students
were engaged, I felt better. The students were very attentive to the book “I am Fire” and I could notice they
were all listening carefully. They understood that fire can be a friend sometimes or a foe; they came up with
great ideas and had accurate comprehension of the book read in the lesson.

For this lesson, I think I managed the classroom better. When the students were not raising their
hand to participate, I tried to recall the instruction, which they followed successfully. I liked that not the
same students were participating and pretty much the whole class was involved in the lesson. Moreover,
the duration of the lesson was neither too short, nor too long, however it was enough for the students to
understand and achieve the goal. Since fire safety is an important topic, I wanted to be sure that the students
understood its importance, so I repeated myself several times and I let the students repeat what we already
discussed to make sure they understood.

If I had to do this lesson again, I would have more discussion. For example, I would include more
“Turn to your partner” discussion, so that all students share their thoughts with their peers. Besides this, I
would change some students from their spots, because I could notice River and Gabe getting distracted and
talking during the lesson.
Overall, I think the lesson went well and I enjoyed teaching the students fire safety. Being in front
of a whole group may be a little intimidating, however I think I am learning a lot from these experiences
and I have been growing as a teacher.
