I AM SAM

People must not be judges by what they are but by who they are. The movie ‘’I
Am Sam’’ was produced in 2004 was written and directed by Jessie Nelson. The
compelling story of Sam Dawson, a mentally challenged father raising his daughter Lucy
with the help of a unique group of friends. As Lucy turns seven and begins to
intellectually surpass her father, their close bond is threatened when their unconventional
living arrangement comes to the attention of a social worker who wants Lucy placed in
foster care. Every person has the capability to love and to take responsibility is not being
measured based on his IQ or even his disabilities, it is surely measured on the heart, the
heart that can love unconditionally. There are several lessons learned from the movie, this
includes no matter what kind of person you are, you are still going to have problems and
hard times with dealing with a newborn; becoming a new parent is hard for everyone;
and raising a child is never easy.

No matter what kind of person you are, you are still going to have problems and
hard times with dealing with a newborn. Newborns are a lot of work and it takes a while
for a parent to get used to it. eventhough sam was diagnosed woth mental retardation, he
had the capability of learning numerous skills and living independent or semi-
independent adult live. He was able to support his everyday life as well as the needs of
her daughter with the use of his job in Starbucks Coffee as a clerk. Sam can communicate
effectively though he stutters sometimes. He also takes good care of himself as well as
his daughter which is quite amazing. His social skill was a meaningful yet a little
immature relationship with his friends or support group which is an amazing thought
about person who is mentally challenge.

Becoming a new parent is hard for everyone. I'm sure it's a very overwhelming
experience for every new parent. It's something people have to learn how to deal with as
they go on, and maybe get some help with a few things from friends and family members
along the way. When i watch this movie, it gave me a new perspective on people with
disabilities. They may not be able to do everything the way we do, but they find a way to
do it. Just because they may appear different doesn't make them any less of a person. It
has taught us that disabilities are never hindrance in fulfilling one’s goal in life as long as
there are hard work just like what Sam possessed when he search for a lawyer for him to
be able to fight for her daughter; love and support which Sam received from his friends
and those who believed in him.

Raising a child is never easy, but like everybody, Sam has learned to adapt.
Though Lucy’s life has never been what anyone would ever call “normal,” it has always
been animated with humor and full of love. he was able to be a father and becomes a
parent to her daughter Lucy Diamond. For me, intellectual ability is not the basis to be a
parent especially a good one because just like in the movie “Love is all you need” which
is what Sam gives to his daughter Lucy. Even if he has disability, he was able to give all
his best to be a great daddy to his daughter and gives unconditional love. This movie
shows that even a father who is mentally challenged can be a responsible father. It
carefully re-examines the relational themes of love, patience, and devotion.

All in all, the movie has a positive image of sam and his disability. Even though,
people have disabilities, they are just like us. People with intellectual disabilities just
need a little more assistance than most of us, they are still normal people, and should not
get treated differently. They say ‘’a pretty face is nothing if you have an ugly heart’’.
