Observation #2

During this hour I got to observe another Special Education teacher team teach an

Algebra class. This was interesting to me because I have never seen a team taught class

outside of the English department. After talking with both the special education teacher and the

general education teacher, I found out that they both take turns teaching the content so that

students see them both as their teachers. I thought this was a great way to run the class

because it showed that both of the teachers have authority in the classroom and that they

collaborate well together. Additionally, the special education teacher explained that in her

academic support class she typically reteaches the lesson from the day so that her students are

getting more support and understanding of the material. I thought this was a great way for

students to get more help or just review.

Overall, I think the way this classroom functioned was very effective. Students knew they

could go to either teacher to get the help that they needed. There did not seem to be an

negativity from the students about being in a team taught class. The students looked

comfortable with both teachers and the teachers had relationships with all students, not just

those they were in there to give additional support to.
