It’s been a while since I’ve done a trust fall. That’s that team building exercise where you close
your eyes and fall backwards into the waiting arms of a teammate. Some consultants will up
the level of trust you have to have in others by having a person stand on a chair and fall back
into the collective arms of the team.
One time a consultant asked for a volunteer to climb the ladder of a short playground slide and
do a trust fall. I volunteered (am I dumb or what?). My teammates tightened up behind me,
and on the count of three, I fell backwards into their arms.
If you want a good laugh, go to YouTube and search for “trust fall fails.” There’s one I watched
a few times where a man was standing on a chair, with his eyes closed, and when the consultant
counted to three, the man fell … forwards, instead of backwards. To the man’s credit, the
consultant didn’t tell him which way to fall.
We’re right in the middle of a trust fall exercise. COVID-19 has upended life as usual. We’ve
been under a stay-at-home order for a month. When we do venture out, we’re encouraged to
wear masks. Many of us haven’t seen loved ones for six weeks. We’re worried about their
health and safety. There’s great uncertainty about when West Virginia will open back up. The
economy has tanked, which has taken our personal treasuries with it.
What gives me hope is that God is there for us; God is on our
side. Each one of us can pray with confidence, “Protect me,
O God, for in you I take refuge” (Psalm 16:1). A refuge is a
place of safety, even while trouble swirls around those in
need.

Stealey and Duff
Street Churches Food
Pantry is open each
The Food Pantry is open at the Duff Street UM Church Multiministries
Tuesday in the Building on the first floor.
MultiMinistries Bldg.
If you know someone who is struggling to feed their family, refer
9:30 a.m.– them to the Food Pantry. We are here to help and will offer them a
hand up at this difficult time.
1:00 p.m.
Due to the COVID-19 virus, extra precautions and social distancing is
observed. We have prebagged food and are not able to offer them a
selection at this time but have food that will help feed their family.
If they have been to the Food Pantry before, all we need is their name
as we have their essential information. We bring the food to the door
and they will not need to come into the building.
New families should bring an ID, proof of residency if not on ID and
birthdates of all family members.
We have food from the Mountaineer Food Bank, but stores are still
limiting some items. When shopping if you are allowed 2 loaves of
bread or 2 dozen eggs and you only need one, consider buying extra
for the Food Pantry. The Food Pantry can use dish soap, cleaner,
shampoo, bath soap, and toothpaste. Money donations will help us
purchase needed items.
