Ayurveda Festival Kerala at Kozhikode, Kerala from
29th January to 2nd February 2016.
Global Ayurveda Festival Kerala is an international
Ayurvedic biennial event started to serve as a force to
galvanize Ayurvedic sector to aspire, plan and achieve greater heights. It has
successfully showcased Ayurveda on a global platform multi-dimensionally
with comprehensive coverage of everything from textual traditions to healing
traditions, from policies to products and from research to economics and events
for discussions, deliberations and decisions.
The impact of the previous GAFs has heightened our responsibility, renewed
the corporate interest and enhanced the academic and public expectations. The
3rd Global Ayurveda Festival Kerala (GAF-III) is planned to address these topics.
GAF 2016 will commence with a mega fortnight long ‘Kerala Ayurveda Fair’
in 14 districts of Kerala state and culminate with 5 days of International
Seminar, Exhibition, Workshop, Business Meet and a host of other activities
that will privilege the participant in building up networking and productive
collaborations apart from updating with latest trends and knowledge in the
field of Ayurveda.
The conference will have a galaxy of International and National scholars who
will share their knowledge and expertise. We wish to provide you most exciting
moments of education and interaction amongst the ‘Teachers of the Teachers’
in the field of Ayurveda and allied sciences.

T
he unique geographical features that mother nature has bestowed
upon Kerala have enabled it to be shielded, unlike the rest of the
country, from any major foreign invasion or cultural incursions. It
has thus remained a cradle of pristine traditional knowledge, culture
and heritage including that of Ayurveda. Ayurveda, as it is practiced in
Kerala, has come to represent an untainted form of traditional Indian wisdom
on health and medicine. This virgin form of Ayurveda has been enriched
with immense regional innovations and improvements to take the shape and
form that we see today. The status of Ayurveda in Kerala is not alternative but
mainstream medicinal system with the highest practitioners-to-population
ratio in comparison to any other place in the world.

Global Ayurveda Festival

G
lobal Ayurveda Festival – Kerala (GAF) is a biennial assemblage of the Ayurveda fraternity conducted
in the State of Kerala, India where Ayurveda has retained its traditional sanctity. The GAF has
established itself as a vibrant platform with a mandate to galvanize the a sector to aspire, plan
and achieve greater heights, both nationally and internationally. GAF is not conceived merely as another
conference or expo but a popular resurgence to venerate the glory and splendour of a living heritage that
every Ayurveda exponent and fan will feel proud to embrace. It’s a tribute to the legacy we have in keeping
Ayurveda as puraanam (ancient) and yet punarnavam (contemporaneously updated.)
In the last four years, with two GAF organised at Thiruvananthapuram in 2012 and in Kochi in 2014, GAF
has grown into an internationally recognized event with ample opportunities for global business, academic
and research tie-ups.
In terms of participants, it has grown from 1800 delegates in 2012 to over 4,000 participants in 2014. GAF
2014 was attended by delegates from 21 countries and the Honourable President of Mauritius
Mr. Raj Keswur Purryag was the Chief Guest. Above all, GAF served as a platform to
network the Ayurveda community in India with the rest of the world...

Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action
(CISSA), Government of Kerala and Ayurveda
Fraternity.This vibrant and promising festival
encompasses all that is good about Ayurveda and offers an

information and to collaborate. The festival will have a host
of fascinating events – lectures by legends in the field, a mega
exhibition giving deep insight into this art of healing and
healthy living, workshops with practical demonstrations,

medicinal plant cultivators, tour operators, patient

ozhikode, also known as Calicut, the city of spices, sculptures, culture and commerce located on the
Malabar Coast, is a traditional land that marked its prominence on the globe as early as 7th Century
by welcoming the Arabs, the Portuguese, the English, the French and the Dutch . In this city, you will
be offered a fascinating panorama of the past, richly interspersed with cultural imprints in literature,
sports, cuisine, music and historical tradition. It continues to get inspired from its past, successfully positions itself
as a modern hub and has the rank of second best Indian city to reside in. Ayurveda, with many traditions and

especially reduction of child mortality
and improvement of maternal health,
the gaps are many in the understanding
and the management of the contextual
issues.Women’s health which is central to
these goals still needs focused attention.
The potentials of Ayurveda in Women’s
Health, that helps to widen the expanse
of medical responsibility beyond just
the social determinants of health, lie
untapped. The efforts to mainstream
AYUSH for specialized purposes like
Reproductive and Child Health are either
conceptually new or are politically
limiting. Policy makers think of
traditional medical systems and seek them
only in such situations where western
medical system is unavailable. It is in this
context, that we take the responsibility
to promote Ayurveda’s role in Women’s
Health as the focus theme for Global
Ayurveda Festival 2016, with a vision to
position this great Indian medical system
as a major tool to achieve the higher goals
our country aspires.
The scope of Ayurveda in Women’s Health
will be presented and discussed in five

therapeutic yoga
Yoga is our system meant for
physical and spiritual benefits. It
preventive and curative prowess
is known, though less explored by
Ayurveda doctors. As sastras that
share same goals for the mankind,
the two systems can go hand in
hand and play a more contributing
role in health care. This 2-day
workshop is planned to tutor the
theory and practice of yoga from a
clinical, therapeutically applicable
pattern so that the participants
can learn yoga modalities to
complement Ayurveda care. The two
days program will be an opportunity
for practitioners and students
who desire to excel in clinical
scenario and who long to offer to
the suffering, all ethical guidance
towards healing.
Workshop on
Panchakarma
Despite being the main treatment modalities, the
classical panchakarma continue to elude their
comprehensive understanding and contextual
application by the students and many practitioners.
The clinical practice situation poses with many
questions and concerns even for those who
have understood and have attained the skills of
administration of these procedures. This 2-day
Workshop on Panchakarma is planned with
these two objectives – a thorough theoretical and
practical coaching for young students and budding
practitioners; and an adequate support session for the
seniors. The resource persons for this workshop are
established teachers and experienced practitioners at
the same time.

medicinal plant species from the oldest
known textbook of medicine in the world
– the Charakasamhita . It will offer a great

“Agrya aushadha” or the chosen best
medicinal plants for various conditions
and popular single remedies will be
exhibited in the venue. Ayurvedic clinical
practice has now become product based

practice so as to begin the reversal of this

Political patronage is critical for any
scientific system to reach out and gain
prominence in a society, and it may not
be incorrect to say that Ayurveda has not

that it ought to have, in the country of its
origin in the last six and half decades since
independence. The Ayurveda political
meet is being conceived at GAF with the
intention of engaging with the political
class to expose them to the inherent
strengths of Ayurveda as a complete
healthcare system and its immense
contemporary potential.

The fourth estate plays a very important
role in our social life and for a science in
transition a proactive support from their
side is a must. This meet is meant to bring
together senior journalists from print
and visual media to garner support for
contemporary Ayurveda.
Women for Ayurveda
A meeting of outstanding women vaidyas,
scientists, social leaders, social workers,
writers, journalists and artists who have
a positive attitude towards Ayurveda for
sharing their experiences and perceptions.

Ayurveda Herbs Cultivators Photography Competition

and Collectors Meet
2 February 2016
One of the most critical determinants of the efficacy of
Ayurveda intervention is the quality of the raw drugs
that goes into the production of Ayurveda medicine.
There are around 900 species of medicinal plants that
are used by the AYUSH industry and around 300 of
them come under the category of RET (Rare, Endangered
and Threatened). Another issue that plagues the industry
where raw drug sourcing is largely unorganised is that
of Adulteration and drug substitution. GAF therefore
felt the need to have an exclusive meet to interact with
Ayurveda herb cultivators and collectors with the
intention of discussing issues pertaining to conservation,
sustainability and preservation of natural bio-diversity
while addressing issues that affect the livelihood of the
people involved.
Themes : Ayurveda - Life in tune with nature
Medicinal Plants
An ‘All India Photography Competition and Exhibition’ will be organised
in two themes in connection with GAF 2016, with entries from all over
India. The selected entries will be exhibited in the GAF 2016 venue.
The entry form may be downloaded from the website. Photocopies of
the entry form may also be used. There is no entry fee, but enclose a
sufficiently stamped envelope for return of entry by registered post.
Public Awareness Programmes

Despite its possibilities and popularity, Ayurveda is yet to reach many
millions as an alternative to conventional medicine or as something
complementing it. These programs are meant to make the public aware
of the infinite possibilities of Ayurveda, as a health maintaining and
healing system. In the multitude of people arriving at the venue, lies an
opportunity to mainstream Ayurveda.
