A. Pre-reading Activities
1. Drill
The teacher will flash a word card. The teacher will let the pupils read
the words.

Who among you here has a father or kuya who is a tricycle driver?
Did they share their experiences of being a driver?
Why is there a need to be honest?

3. Unlocking of Difficult Words

b. Tuberculosis (an infectious bacterial disease or highly contagious
infection)
His mother died of Tuberculosis.

B. During Reading
Set standards for reading.
The teacher and pupils take turn in reading the story.
The teacher will read the first part of the story and ask the following
questions:

Call one pupil to continue reading the next part of the story or the
second paragraph an ask the following questions:
• Why did Lope stop going to school? How did he help his
family?
Call another pupil to read the last part of the story and ask the
following questions:

The Honest Tricycle Driver

Lope is one of those tricycle drivers driving within the city proper of
Kabankalan City. He is an honest driver.
He was only ten years old when his mother passed away due to
Tuberculosis. He is the eldest among the seven siblings. At a young age, he
learned how to earn money by selling balut and boiled peanuts after classes.
During weekends, he collected old scraps around the city proper. The money
he collected were given to his father to buy food and to support their
education.
Lope’s father is a porter at the market and has no regular work. So, at
the age of eighteen, Lope decided to stop going to school and help his
father instead in raising their family. As a tricycle driver, he is admired by
everyone because aside from being honest, he is very polite and helpful. He
always returns the excess change, greet passengers politely and carry their
heavy bags.
One day, an old woman left her bag in Lope’s tricycle. He
remembered that he brought his passenger to the old municipal hall in front
of the plaza. He immediately returned the bag to the old woman. The old
woman was very thankful because of Lope’s honesty.
