Purpose of Job The post-holder will have a 6 month probationary period as Clinical
Fellow working under the supervision of a Consultant trainer in
order to gain specific competencies in Addictions Psychiatry. Upon
evidencing attainment of the required competencies and
successful completion of the probationary period, the doctor will
transition to the role of Specialty doctor in Addictions Psychiatry.
The appointment as Specialty Doctor will be at different service(s)
to where the doctor will complete their fellowship.
Working under supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist in
Addictions, the Clinical Fellow will gain skills and experience in
assessment and management of a range of clinical issues that
present to specialist addiction services. During the period of
fellowship the doctor will work to a timetable that has a split of
clinical and CPD sessions each week to allow them to gain skills
and experience to meet the required competencies. During clinical
sessions, the post holder will develop skills in assessment,
diagnosis and formulation of clinical management plans. During
CPD sessions the post holder will be required to actively engage in
activities that to update their knowledge and skills. Throughout the
period the post holder is required to demonstrate progress and
achieving competencies through structured reviews and formative
assessment of progress and competence.
The post-holder will be required to work flexibly across a number
of operational sites as required with access to consultant and other
senior colleagues. The post-holder will be expected to take
responsibility for personal development, identifying personal
training needs and participate in regular weekly supervision with
their consultant trainer & annual appraisal. They will be required
to engage fully in the process for revalidation.

1. Responsibilities
• In conjunction with other members of the Multidisciplinary Team to plan and deliver
appropriate individually tailored treatment plans.
• To engage with people who have substance misuse problems and provide them
with general healthcare and general mental health assessments and contribute to the
development of individual care plans.
• Work with other team members to ensure effective administration in terms of record
keeping, discharge summaries and correspondence to other relevant bodies. Work
with management team to ensure all paperwork is regularly audited.
• Support nursing team to titrate patients safely on to a treatment regime and ensure
that procedures are constantly reviewed to promote best evidenced-based practice in
accordance with CGL’s clinical guidelines.
• Provide training, advice and support to other clinical staff to ensure safe and effective
service delivery.

• Attend multidisciplinary meetings and other meetings as deemed appropriate by the
supervising consultant psychiatrist
• Support the service in carrying out research which will be of benefit to the future
treatment of patients
• The post-holder will attend the monthly Doctors’ Meeting; which includes an
academic programme of CPD, and complex case discussions. They will also be able
to attend any other CPD activities organised by this group.
• Establish good communication and effective working relationships with all relevant
agencies in relation to individual patients and service development
• Build a knowledge of and links with voluntary and independent service providers
locally.

• The post holder will be expected to participate in clinical audit and other clinical
governance activity.
• In addition to in-house training and regular supervision the post holder will be
encouraged to further their experience and qualifications in the field of addiction by
attendance at relevant workshops / courses.
4. Out of Hours
There are currently no on-call commitments.

In carrying out the above duties the post holder will:
• Work flexibly across operational sites as required by the supervising consultant.
• To contribute to the overall performance of the service to ensure that contractual output
targets are achieved.
• Work flexibly within an agreed number of hours of work to support maintaining the most
appropriate level of service provision.
• Seek to improve personal performance, contribution, knowledge and skills.
• Participate in appraisal, supervision and Learning & Development processes.
• Keep abreast of developments in services, legislation and practice relevant to the
relevant client group.
• Ensure the implementation of all CGL policies.
• Contribute to maintaining safe systems of work and a safe environment.
• Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade of the post.
