CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT QUESTIONS

Use these questions to help generate interesting decisions about your character (or
non-character). Once you’ve answered them, think of how you can incorporate that
answer into your drawing. And don’t be limited to these questions—make up your own!

WHO
• What is their name?
• How old are they?
• What is their job?
• Where are they from?
• Is their ancestry significant?
• What is their personality like?
• Are they human? Something else?
WHAT
• What are they doing?
• What are their likes? dislikes?
• What are their dreams? fears? desires? • Are the laws of nature the same?
• What do they do for fun?
• What are they feeling?
WHERE
• Where are they?
• Where were they before?
• Where are they going to be?
• Where would they rather be?
WHEN
• What’s the day? month? season? year?
• What time of day is it?
• What happened before this illustration?
• What will happen after this illustration? • Who owns this object?
WHY
• Why are they acting a certain way?
• Why are they in this situation?
• Why do they fear what they fear?
• Why should we care about them?
GENERAL
• What is most important?
• How should the viewer feel?
• Why should the viewer be interested?
• Are there are any secrets?
• Are things relatable?
• What obstacles/problems are present?
• What bad thing could happen?
• What good thing could happen?
ENVIRONMENTS
• How is the universe like ours? different?
• Where should our focus be? Why?
• Who/What is in the environment?
• Where is the light coming from?
• How old is the environment?
• What is the history?
• What influence has man had here?
• Is something about to happen here?
• Did something just happen here?
• How would people be dressed?
• What is the mood of the setting?
OBJECTS
• How does this object work?
• Why is this object important?
• What is the history of this object?
• Is it similar to a real object?
• Where would one find this thing?
• Does it have magical properties?
• Who wants it?
