CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT QUESTIONS

Use these questions to help generate interesting decisions about your character (or
non-character). Once you’ve answered them, think of how you can incorporate that
answer into your drawing. And don’t be limited to these questions—make up your own!

WHO GENERAL
• What is their name? • What is most important?
• How old are they? • How should the viewer feel?
• What is their job? • Why should the viewer be interested?
• Where are they from? • Are there are any secrets?
• Is their ancestry significant? • Are things relatable?
• What is their personality like? • What obstacles/problems are present?
• Are they human? Something else? • What bad thing could happen?
• What good thing could happen?
WHAT
• What are they doing? ENVIRONMENTS
• What are their likes? dislikes? • How is the universe like ours? different?
• What are their dreams? fears? desires? • Are the laws of nature the same?
• What do they do for fun? • Where should our focus be? Why?
• What are they feeling? • Who/What is in the environment?
• Where is the light coming from?
WHERE • How old is the environment?
• Where are they? • What is the history?
• Where were they before? • What influence has man had here?
• Where are they going to be? • Is something about to happen here?
• Where would they rather be? • Did something just happen here?
• How would people be dressed?
WHEN • What is the mood of the setting?
• What’s the day? month? season? year?
• What time of day is it? OBJECTS
• What happened before this illustration? • How does this object work?
• What will happen after this illustration? • Who owns this object?
• Why is this object important?
WHY • What is the history of this object?
• Why are they acting a certain way? • Is it similar to a real object?
• Why are they in this situation? • Where would one find this thing?
• Why do they fear what they fear? • Does it have magical properties?
• Why should we care about them? • Who wants it?
