This document outlines steps for a character design project that incorporates storytelling elements. The steps include: 1) choosing a character archetype from a list of options, 2) sketching the character within a short time limit, 3) answering questions to develop the character's backstory, 4) sketching the character again considering how to visually represent traits from the backstory, and optionally 5) further developing the second sketch into a finished piece. Students are encouraged to upload their project work to a sharing platform for feedback and inspiration.

Now that you know how powerful story can be in a character design, it’s time to give it a go! To best get a sense of how it can be applied you will be doing the following:
STEP 1: CHOOSE AN ARCHETYPE
From either the following list or one from your own choosing, pick a well-known character. Remember, if it’s something you would need to research to draw don’t choose it.
• Knight • Wizard • Jester • Astronaut
• Ninja • Zombie • Musician • Monk • Rapper • Cowboy • Alien • Golfer • Judge • King • Vampire • Spy STEP 2: SKETCH YOUR CHARACTER Once you have picked your archetype it’s time to draw your character. Don’t think too much, just draw. Preferably, give yourself a relatively short time limit (5-15 mins).
STEP 3: ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS
Now, answer 5-10 questions about your character as discussed in the class. Ask any you like! If you are stumped, refer to the PDF for possible questions to ask.
STEP 4: SKETCH YOUR CHARACTER AGAIN
Armed with the answers from your questions, re-draw your character. Be sure to stick to the same time limit you gave yourself as before. Think “How can I visually get across this trait of my character?”
BONUS STEP: TURN YOUR SKETCH INTO A FINISHED PIECE
If you want to take things a step further, continue to develop your second drawing until it’s a finished piece!
DON’T FORGET TO UPLOAD YOUR PROJECT TO SKILLSHARE
Uploading your project is a great way to get feedback on the work you’ve done, inspire others to do the same and bring more attention to the class.
