Sustainability (Service industry)

Sustainability refers to focusing on meeting the needs of the present


without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
needs. The sustainability encourages the businesses to frame their
business decisions in terms of years and decades rather than of the
next quarter’s earning report and to consider the other factors also
rather than focusing on only profits of the company we can take
example of some companies like Tata which has eliminated all the
paper work from their offices and made all their work online. The
companies can achieve their sustainable needs by cutting emissions,
lowering the use of the energy, sourcing the produces from the fair-
trade organizations, and by disposing of their physical waste properly
and using carbon footprint as little as possible.

A service industry is the industry that earns revenue through providing


the intangible products and services. Service industry is the industry
which is involved in Retail,transportation,banking and
insurance,tourism,distribution,marketing,hospitality and food services
and other service-dominated businesses.As service industry are getting
more prominent today there is the greater need of the services to go
more substainable and green. The sevice sector in the objective of
satisfying their customers and earning profits should also focus on how
they should abide by the environmental standards follow the practices
of being green.The companies should follow the substainability by
following the activities like using recycled materials,Environmental
monitoring and instrumentation,eco-construction,Solid waste
management and recyling ,nature protection,private Environmental
management and many other activities to go more substainable and
green.The examples of companies Mcdonalds and keventers are some
of the major steps and eye openers for the whople industry. They
started using paper cups rather than using plastic cups for the drinks.
The other thing used by them are glass bottles by keventers which
ensures that even paper is saved in the environment. We can also
interpret the way PVR’s are serving food and drinks in cinemas. They
banned use of plastic for storing foods and are also providing paper
cups and straws for the drinks. The common thing that they all went
for, is removing plastic lids on the cups. This helps in less use of plastic
and also better profits by not using the material and selling the product
at the same price. The cost of raw material is reduced which leads to
increase in consumption of better quality of cups and packing materials
at the same aggregated cost. In PVRs movie screening time has also
been reduced by some percentages, majorly due to less number of
trailers shown in a show. Also PVRs has introduced bio-toilets in their
locations which uses less water for cleaning themselves. They work
automatically from recycled water and are considered safe for
environment and waste disposal too.

Talking about other segments, HCL and Wipro have started using online
versions of documents rather than using a lot of paper in their office
premises. Shift from offline to online and better use of technologies
have made them to contribute their part in the sutainable
environment. It also helps to reduce their costs as before, they would
send the document both in online format and offline formats. And now
the use of the online version have made them to save significant
amount of sums wasted duplicating the matter unnecessarily.

In the advertising sector the companies asoociated for adverising are


now opting for digital advertising instead of using paper in billboards or
for pamplets we can take example of companies like Jcdecaux they
provide sevices in exache for the advertising revenue. We can take
example of the delhi bus stops where the advertising is done digitally
on billboards of the companies like airtel, coca-cola etc.

Green marketing is also the concept of the substainable marketing and


in the process also keeping the profits of the organization.The firms
should not just focus on the objectives and profitability of the
organization they should satisfy the consumers needs and wants in a
way that the brand and the product creates a life time relationship with
the company.The companies in green marketing should focus on the
three main actions:Reducing,recycling and re-using the resources of the
organization.The companies like Wipro,Infosys,maruti,delhi CNG are
associated with the green marketing concepts.

Substanabilty is an important factors in deciding the effectiveness and


efficiency of any service in the economic and the social benefits.The
concept of the substainabilty consists of the three aspects of
substainability which are the environment,the society and the
economy.Any business service which contributes in the taking care of
the substainable clean environment without leaving its footprint and
which do not take part in any of the social problems and which
contributes in the economic development of the countries is regarded
as green.By adopting the gree technologies for substainability the
service industry can plan their service strategies.
