Attempt all questions in sequential order. (Use of relevant assumptions are allowed)

(a)State and explain essential parts of electrical drive with the help of a neat
diagram. What are the functions of power converter? 5+7
1 (b)A drive has following parameters J=10kg-mt 2 , T=15+0.05N.N-m and
T1=5+0.06 N,N-m, where N is the speed in rpm. Initially the drive is working in
steady state. Now the drive is braked by electrical braking. Torque of the motor
in braking is given by T=-10-0.04N, N-m. Calculate time taken by the drive to
stop.
(a)What do you understand by steady state stability of an electrical drive? 5
Explain that the steady state stability of a drive depends on relative
characteristics of the motor and load and not just on motor (or load)
characteristics.
(b)What are the reasons of using load equalization in an electric drive? 4
2

(c) Derive the expression of equivalent moment of inertia and equivalent torque 7
of an electrical drive. Consider the case of two loads one coupled directly to
the motor shaft and second through a rotational to linear motion transmission
system. Assume the abbreviations as per your convenience.
(a)A drive has following equations for motor and load torques:
T=1+2w,, and T1 = 3j4,7 7, ,Obtain the equilibrium points and determine their 7
3 steady state stability.
• (b)Justify that the four quadrant operation can be achieved by a DC chopper. 5

(a) What are the limitations of supply frequency control to control the speed of 5
a three phase Induction Motor? Explain with the help of torque —speed
4 characteristics.
(b)Differentiate between regenerative and rheostatic braking of a DC- drive. 5
Which converter you will prefer and why?
