Operational Modes
Table of Contents
Types of Operational Modes (Work Modes)................................................................4-1
Save Mode.................................................................................................................4-1
Safe Mode..................................................................................................................4-2
Free Mode..................................................................................................................4-3

4.1 Types of Operational Modes (Work Modes)

The CSU supports the following three operational modes. The default operational mode
is Safe.
l Save mode
l Safe mode
l Free mode
To query the operational mode, users can select Real Msg. > CSU Msg. > CSU.

To set the operational mode, users can select Para.Set > Batt.Para. > Work Mode.
In any operational mode, the rectifiers reach their current limit and decrease their output
voltage if the load current is higher than the sum of the rated current of all operating
rectifiers. As a result, the batteries will be discharged.

4.2 Save Mode

Save mode (energy-saving mode) is a high-efficiency mode. It can ensure that the rectifier
efficiency is always at the peak to save more power. In the Save mode, three sub-modes
are available:
l Auto Save Ctrl. (the default sub-mode)
l Temp.NonSave Ctrl.
l Perm.NonSave Ctrl.
Select Ctrl. > Save Ctrl. to set a sub-mode.

Auto Save Ctrl.

In Auto Save Ctrl. sub-mode, the CSU automatically switches the system to operate in
Auto Save Mode or Auto NonSave Mode according to system configuration and real-time
circumstances.

l Auto Save Mode

4-1

SJ-20130417144909-002|2013-05-20(R1.0) ZTE Proprietary and Confidential

ZXDZ CSU500(V1.00.00.00) Operation Guide

à In Auto Save Mode, the CSU calculates the number (N) of required rectifiers in
real time and sets excess rectifiers in sleep mode. In this way, the number (M)
of normally operating rectifiers can be equal to N, and the rectifiers can operate
at their peak efficiency. The CSU calculates N by tracking the total load current
and battery charging current in real time.
à In Auto Save Mode, the CSU arranges the rectifiers work in shifts according to a
period parameter. The process is as follows: The CSU activates the rectifier that
has been in sleep mode for the longest period of time, and then sets the one that
has operated for the longest period of time into sleep mode. In this process, the
CSU ensures three-phase balance as its priority and that M is equal to N.
The rectifier shift period can be set and related parameter is SMR Rotated
Period , 7 days by default. When this parameter is set to 0, the shifts are
disabled.
l Auto NonSave Mode
If Auto Save Mode fails, the system automatically switches to Auto NonSave Mode
and activates all the rectifiers. When the saving conditions are satisfied again, it
automatically switches back to Auto Save Mode.

Temp.NonSave Ctrl.
In Temp.NonSave Ctrl. sub-mode, the system:
1. Activates all the rectifiers first.
2. Switches to Auto Save Mode after the period of the Temp.NonSave Delay (24 hours
by default).

Perm.NonSave Ctrl.
In Perm.NonSave Ctrl. sub-mode, the system activates all the rectifiers and stays in this
sub-mode unless it is manually set to another operational mode.

4.3 Safe Mode

Safe mode is a redundancy operational mode based on reliability.

In Safe mode, the CSU calculates the number (N) of required rectifiers in real time and
performs the N+1 backup. The CSU calculates N by tracking the total load current and the
highest battery charging current in real time.
When the CSU detects that the number (M) of normally operating rectifiers is less than
N+1, it activates the rectifiers that are currently in sleep mode until M equals N+1. After
that, the CSU does not set excessive rectifiers in sleep mode when N decreases.

Chapter 4 Operational Modes

4.4 Free Mode

In Free mode, the CSU does not calculate the number (N) of required rectifiers or
automatically control operational status of rectifiers. In this mode, maintenance personnel
can activate rectifiers or set them in sleep mode with no restrictions from the CSU.

Caution!
Free mode is for system debugging. Only professional maintenance personnel can use
this mode.

To prevent batteries from being over-charged, the system limits the maximum charging
current. The maximum charging current depends on the parameter Chg.Curr.Coeff.
When the batteries are set to the following two types, the default value of the
Chg.Curr.Coeff.is different:
l When batteries of deep cycling type are set, the default value of the Chg.Curr.Coeff.is
0.15 C10.
l When batteries of fast charging type are set, the default value of the Chg.Curr.Coeff.is
0.30 C10.

Disconnections During Battery Discharge...................................................................7-1

7.1 LLTD Function

The Load Low Temperature Disconnect (LLTD) function protects loads (communication
equipment) from being damaged by low temperature. When the environment temperature
is lower than LLTD Env.Temp. (-40 ℃ to +10℃), the CSU disconnects the LLVD1 loads
and LLVD2 loads.
To apply this function, the parameter LLTD Enabled should be set to Enabled.

Caution!
This function protects the LLVD1 and LLVD2 loads but not the BLVD loads.

7.2 BHTD Function

The Battery High Temperature Disconnect (BHTD) function protects batteries from being
damaged by high temperature. When the battery temperature is higher than BHTD Temp.
(40 ℃ to 60 ℃), the CSU disconnects the batteries.
To make this function effective, the parameter BHTD Enabled should be set to Enabled.

7.3 Disconnections During Battery Discharge

Overview
In case of AC failure, the CSU provides the following disconnection functions to protect
batteries from being damaged by over-discharging and ensure that the primary loads can
operate for a longer time.
l Load Low Voltage Disconnect (LLVD)1 function
When the battery discharging meets the prerequisite for LLVD1, the CSU disconnects
the LLVD1 loads.

Requirement: Necessary components for LLVD1 have been installed. It is required that
the CSU can perform the LLVD1 function when the remaining battery capacity is lower
than 0.50 C10.
Analysis: Because necessary components for LLVD1 have been installed, users only
need to set related parameters in the CSU. Find these parameters through the menu path
Para.Set > Batt.Para. and set them properly as described in Table 7-2.

8.3 Setting the Device Address for a Rectifier

Context
The setting of a rectifier device address is the allocation of an ID that can be identified by
the CSU. Requirements for this process are as follows:
l The default address is 1. After installing a rectifier in slot 2, change its device address
to 2, likewise the other rectifiers.
l If rectifiers are not installed in accordance with slot sequence, re-allocate device
addresses for these rectifiers. For example, if rectifiers are installed in slots 1 and 3
but slot 2 is left empty because it is damaged, the device addresses of the rectifiers
in slots 1 and 3 must be set to 1 and 2. Incorrect address settings can cause the
CSU to activate false SMR Comm.Fail alarms.
For how to set the device address of a rectifier, see Figure 8-4 and refer to the steps that
follow.
