Year 3000

In the music videos of “Year 3000” by Busted in 2002 and “Year 3000” by Jonas

Brothers 2006, both use the same set of lyrics to explain what they think the year 3000 will look

like. Although some minor changes were made to the lyrics to associate itself with the year it

was released. Busted thought things would be in cartoon form and cars will fly, while the Jonas

Brothers version was more towards galaxy looking women and flying cars, and not so much

cartoon like. While both had some different thoughts on the year 3000, they had many similar

thoughts as well. They both believed cars would fly, they believed their albums would sell out

during that year. They also thought people would live under water.

“Year 3000” music video by Busted in 2002 starts off in with the band making music in

their bedroom and leads to them coming outside to their neighbor who has a car as a time

machine. This music video shows their claims made of the year 3000 mentioning triple breasted

women swimming around town because they believed everyone would live under water during

this time. They mention that this song had gone multi-platinum in the year 3000, and that

everyone bought their seventh album. During this claim, they mention they outsold Michael

Jackson, since he was a big hit during that time. The audience they were going for were

young adults into pop, and even some that were interested in time travel. The reasons why I think

this, is because the music genre is pop rock and the video contains time traveling. The main

characters used in this music video are the band members themselves, their neighbor, and the

women swimming around town in the year 3000.

While all this was in the Busted version, the Jonas Brothers seen the year 3000 a little

different in their music video in 2006. The video first starts off with the band making music in

their garage when they hear “funny noise” and go to check. It turned out to be their neighbor just

like in the Busted version, but in this version, the time machine was in their neighbors’ couch

underneath the cushion. When they traveled to the year 3000, women had their hair up in the

round buns like they did in Star Wars and they floated. They also said everyone lived under

water like Busted claimed in their music video. They too claimed their song had gone multi-

platinum in the year 3000. Instead of saying they outsold Michael Jackson, like Busted, they

claimed they outsold Kelly Clarkson, since she had the number one hit during that time. The

audience for this video was intended for younger teenagers since the Jonas Brothers were a

younger boy band during 2006. They also make the claim of women with round buns in their

hair instead of mentioning women’s breasts, like Busted did in their song. This made me believe

it was for a younger audience. The main characters in this video are the band themselves, the

neighbor, and the women of the future, just like the music video by Busted.

The relationship between these two videos is they both are explaining their views on what

they think the year 3000 will look like. Although they have slight differences on what they think

the future will look like, they both believed the future would be a lot different than what it was

during the time their songs were written. The mention of the famous artists of that time help you

distinguish the time in which the videos were made. Both appealed to a younger generation of

people rather than an older generation. I think this because they are a both a pop song sang by a

group of younger boys, or in other words a young “boy band”.

Both videos use logos to convince their audience what the year 3000 will look like. They

do this by adding their views on what the year will look like. Although both have different views

of the future, they both try showing their claims on what the future will be like by adding flying

cars, galaxy looking women, cartoon like village, and people living under water. They also try to

claim that a time machine can be made and used. They also use ethos in both videos by trying to

convince their audience that their song had gone multi-platinum in the future and outsold famous

artists.
