1. Let S be a noninertial frame rotating with constant angular velocity Ω
relative to the inertial frame S0 . Let both frame have the same origin (i.e. O = O0 ). a) Find the Lagrangian L = T − V in terms of the coordinates r and ṙ of S. Remember that you must first evaluate T in the inertial frame. In this connection, recall that v0 = v + Ω × r. b) Show that the equations of motion are mr̈ = F + 2mṙ × Ω + m(Ω × r) × Ω.
2. A bead slides without friction on a horizontal rigid wire rotating at
constant angular speed ω. Find the force exerted on the bead by the wire. Neglect gravity.
3. A pendulum is rigidly fixed to an axle held by two supports so that
it can swing only in a plane perpendicular to the axle. The pendulum consists of a mass M attached to a massless rod of length L. The supports are mounted on a platform that rotates with constant angular velocity Ω. Find the pendulum’s frequency assuming that the amplitude is small.
4. On a certain planet, which is perfectly spherically symmetric, the free
fall acceleration has magnitude g = g0 at the north pole and g = λg0 at the equator (0 ≤ λ ≤ 1). Find g(θ), the free fall acceleration at colatitude θ as a function of θ.
